CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
The Student Industrial training work Experience Scheme is skill training programmed designed
to expose and prepare Students of Universities, polytechnics, College of technologies and
College of Education for the industrial work situation which they are likely to face after their
graduation.
The scheme had given students the opportunity of getting familiar with and expose to the
experience needed in handling the tools and materials which are not provided by the institutions
of study.
This report is to keep record and to serve as a proof of my completion of the training exercise
which covers a period of four months starting from 19th September 2016 to 6th January 2017.
1.1 BRIEF HISTORY OF SIWES
SIWES was established by ITF in 1973 to solve the problem of lack of adequate practical skills
preparatory for employment in industries by Nigerian graduates of tertiary institutions.
The Scheme exposes students to industry based skills necessary for a smooth transition from the
classroom to the world of work. It affords students of tertiary institutions the opportunity of
being familiarized and exposed to the needed experience in handling machinery and equipment
which are usually not available in the educational institutions.
Participation in SIWES has become a necessary pre-condition for the award of Diploma and
Degree certificates in specific disciplines in most institutions of higher learning in the country, in
accordance with the education policy of government.
Beneficiaries -Undergraduate students of the following: Agriculture, Engineering, Technology,
Environmental, Science, Education, Medical Science and Pure and Applied Sciences.
Duration - Four months for Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, and Six months for the
Universities.

CHAPTER FOUR
4.1 CONCLUSION
In view of the student industrial work experience scheme has prepared and also given me the
adequate practical background I needed for my course of study.
CHALLENGES
Financial challenges: student are not paid despite working for extra hours
Cost of transport: due to distance to place of work from my place of residence, transport has
always be a vital challenge since we are not being paid at the end of the month.
Managerial challenge: despite your endless effort to teach the student, management still give you
more tasks to do.
4.2 RECOMMENDATIONS:
In view of the relevance of SIWES program, it is important that it is sustained by the federal
government through the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) as it exposes the student to work tools,
facilities, and equipment that may not be available in their respective institutions in relation to
their course of study.
To this end, I recommend that the following under-listed points should be implemented:
The program co-coordinators from the industrial Training Fund in the various institutions and the
Federal capital territory (FCT) should ensure that the students are placed in the relevant
department in these organizations.
There should be proper supervision of the student concerned by both the ITF and institution-
based supervisors.
Most of the government institutions should make it as a service to pay a monthly stipend to the
students concerned.
Improvement of allowance and free transport services for student on attachment to various
organizations.
The companies should put in place all the necessary facilities needed to enhance the knowledge
of the student in the industrial attachment.
Proper placement of the student for such program by the industrial training department of each
institution through creating a strong alliance with different companies.
