The Fishermen
by Ang Kiukok, 1981
This painting shows fishermen fishing in the sea. I can also see the sun, net, and most especially
the fishes. These figures relate with each other because fishermen catch fishes by using a net and
they usually fish during late afternoon that is why the color of the sun is red. For the materials, I
think the painter used oil to paint and he pulled off the intended effect with the colors used. The
dominant elements in the artwork are the color, shapes, and lines. The dominant colors used were
yellow, cream, orange, red, brown, and black or the deep autumn palette. For the shapes, I think
this type of painting is cubism because I see a lot of angles and views and also, the fishermen
appear like abstracted. For the lines, it connects the space between two points and most often
used in two-dimensional artworks just like this. The variations appear among repeated elements
are the lines since they look like a pattern.
In my own academic opinion, the quality of the artwork affects its appearance, image, and
function. If the artwork is in good quality, then it will look beautiful in the eyes and it will help
for the purpose of personal, social, and physical attributes. I can also say that Ang Kiukok
exerted enough effort in painting this artwork though the technique he used was traditional oil
painting. This kind of painting is not my style because cubism is really not my thing but I
personally think that it’s good. The value of this painting is that we all know that being a
fisherman is not an easy job since they risk their lives every time they sail to fish. They work so
hard to support their family and also to provide people food which is the fish itself. In our society
today, fishermen weren’t given enough credit for their work. A lot of people don’t know that
fishing is very important because there are thousands of people who make a living by fishing.
Besides, fish is an essential food all over the world most especially in the Philippines since we
have abundant marine life. The main idea and the overall message of the painting for me are the
struggles or hardships of the fishermen just to catch fish. Their big arms show that they are
working hard every day for trying to haul the fish. I’ve done my research a while ago that this
painting illustrates Ang Kiukok’s childhood life where the fishermen cast their nets in the sea
and carry the prize back to their homes.
