1040f13b.mkr 9
Trailer brake relay valve

Trailer relay valve, version I, Wabco

Drive position
The supply pressure goes from intake port 11
through outlet port 12 to the trailer supply line.
The service pressure from the parking circuit in
port 43 pushes the piston 2 downwards, causing
piston 1 to stay in its lower position and valve 6
to close.

Braking position
The rear circuit service pressure enters port 41.
The front circuit service pressure enters port 42.
Pistons 3 and 4 are pushed down, valve 5 is
closed and valve 6 is opened. This enables the
supply air to go from intake port 11 to the trailer
control line at port 22 causing the trailer to
brake.

When port 22 is pressurized, a pressure is also

built up in space B. The pressure in B pushes
piston 8 down and closes the aperture to the
silencer (7). When the pressure in port 22 and
space B is 0.3 bar higher than the pressure in
port 41 and 42, the passage between B and A is
opened. As long as there is a balance between
the pressure in A and B and the pressures in
41 and 42, the regulated pressure in port 22 will
be 0.3 bar higher than the incoming pressures in
41 and 42.

10 1040f13b.mkr
Trailer brake relay valve

Balancing position
When the pressure has been increased, the
pressure in port 22 and space B pushes piston 1
down causing valve 6 to close. The pressures of
ports 41 and 42 keep valve 5 closed. The valve is
in balancing position until the pressure in any of
the ports is changed.

Releasing the brake

Port 41 and 42 are depressurized. Piston 3 and 4
move upwards, they open valve 5 and close
valve 6. The air is evacuated through silencer 7.

Loss of function in one control circuit

If the service pressure to one of the ports 41 and
42 is lost, the valve operates normally.
If the pressure in the rear circuit (port 41) is lost,
the increase in pressure works with reduced
power.

1040f13b.mkr 11
Trailer brake relay valve

Emergency brake
There is no service pressure at port 41 and 42.
When applying the parking or trailer brake
manual control valve, the pressure in port
43 falls. Piston 1 and 2 move upwards, valve 6
opens and the trailer brakes are applied.

Venting feature
Normal driving position
• There is no pressure at port 41 and 42. The
service pressure can pass in at port 11 and
out at port 12 and on to the trailer supply
line.
Braking with damaged control line to trailer
• If the trailer control line is damaged when
braking, there is no increase in pressure in
the control line. The pressure from the rear
circuit (port 41) presses down piston 8,
causing the passage between port 11 and 12
to close. The pressure in port 12 is vented
through the leakage in port 22.

Trailer brake relay valve

Trailer relay valve, version II, Knorr

Drive position
The supply pressure goes from intake port 11
through outlet port 12 to the trailer supply line.
The service pressure from the parking circuit
(port 43) pushes piston 1 downwards until it
reaches its lower position and valve 4 is kept
closed.

Braking position
The service pressure of the front and rear
circuits enters through port 41 and 42. Piston 9
and 2 are pushed down, valve 4 opens enabling
the supply air to go from intake port 11 to port
22 and the trailer control line, causing the trailer
brakes to apply. Piston 3 is kept in its rest
position by the spring and the pressure in port
22.

© Scania CV AB 1999, Sweden

1040f13b.mkr 13
Trailer brake relay valve

Balancing position
The pressure in port 22 pushes piston 1 down
causing valve 4 to close. Because of the pressure
in port 41 and 42, piston 9, 2, 3 and 10 are not
pushed upwards. The valve is in equilibrium
position until the pressure in any of the ports is
changed.

Releasing the brake

Port 41 and 42 are depressurized. Piston 9,
2 and 3 move upwards, valve 4 closes and
passage 5 is opened. Port 22 is vented through
the silencer (6).

Loss of function in one control circuit

If the service pressure to one of the ports 41 and
42 is lost, the valve operates normally. The
increase in pressure works even if one of the
control circuits ceases to operate.

14 1040f13b.mkr
Trailer brake relay valve

Emergency brake
There is no service pressure at port 41 and 42.
When applying the parking or trailer brake
manual control valve, the pressure in port 43
decreases. Piston 7 moves upwards and valve 4
opens; spring 8 prevents passage 5 from
opening. Supply air from port 11 goes to port 22
causing the trailer to brake.

Venting feature
If the trailer control line is damaged when
braking, there is no increase in pressure in the
control line. The pressure from the parking
circuit (port 43) pushes piston 7 to its lowest
position. The pressure from the service brake
circuits pushes piston 2 and 9 downwards. As
there is no pressure under piston 3, it is pushed
down. Valve 4 is closed and the passage between
port 11 and 12 is almost fully interrupted, only
passage 11 is open. Passage 11 is too small to
pressurize port 22. The pressure from port 12 is
vented through the leakage in port 22.

Trailer brake connections

Trailer brake connections

General
There are many different designs of trailer brake
connections from a large number of
manufacturers. The two most common types are
described below: ISO connection, DUO-Matic
connection.

ISO connection

Through the connection heads the brake lines of

the truck and the trailer are connected to each
other. When the two halves of the connection
head are connected, the closing valve opens and
an air-proof channel is formed for the air to pass.
In order to prevent faulty connection, the
connection heads for the supply and control
lines have different lugs and different colours on
their covers. In addition, some connection heads Left: Connection head for control line, with

Trailer brake connections

DUO-Matic connection

The connection head is connected to both supply

and trailer control line. The connection consists
of two main components: the truck section and
the trailer section.
The truck section has two valves, one for the
supply line and one for the control line. The
valves open automatically when the trailer
section is connected. The trailer section is held
pressed against the truck section by the
spring-loaded covers. The trailer section also
has a spring-loaded protective cover. The covers
act as protection when the trailer section is
disconnected.

The truck section cover (6) opens when the

handle (5) is pressed down. When the sections
are disconnected, the valve spring (3) presses
the valve cap (2) against the cylinder gasket (1).
Air cannot pass. When the sections are
connected, the trailer section is pressed against
the spring-loaded cover (6) of the truck section.
This causes the trailer section to press in valve 4
of the truck section, which in turn keeps the
valve cap (2) separated from the cylinder gasket
(1) enabling air to pass to the trailer.

Quick release valve

Quick release valve

General
The quick release valve is a part of the brake
system on T124GA6x4. This brake system has
been adapted to the conditions in the USA.
The quick release valve is used to quickly
evacuate the control line to the trailer when
completing braking.
To avoid problems with a cracking diaphragm in
the quick release valve, a new valve with a
stronger diaphragm has been introduced. The
new quick release valve has been introduced

105 891
from chassis number SLA 3505275.

Applying the trailer brake

Air enters through intake 1. (Air at low pressure
passes through duct 5 and starts to fill up outlet
2.) When the air pressure increases, diaphragm 4
is pushed away and air passes through the outlet.
As long as there is a constant or increasing
pressure at intake 1, the diaphragm is kept in this
position.
Small changes in pressure at intake 1 will be
balanced by duct 5.

1 Intake from trailer relay valve (port 22)

2 Outlet to trailer control line
3 Vent
Releasing the trailer brake 4 Diaphragm
When the pressure at outlet 1 is reduced, the 5 Duct
diaphragm will be pushed upwards by the higher
pressure at outlet port 21 and 22. With the
diaphragm in its upper position, the outlet ports
are evacuated through the vent (3).
