Best Friends Forever

It was a cold day in December. The students in Year 7 at Pittsbury Secondary School didn't have lessons because
they were going on a school trip. After registration, everyone lined up on the pavement outside the school to get on
the coaches. They all felt excited because they were going to the Science Museum in London. Marie got onto the
coach and sat down next to her best friend, Josie. She was pleased to be able to sit next to Josie and happy that
she was wearing her new white coat.
There was a lot of traffic on the way to the museum and the coach moved very slowly. It began to get late and the
students started feeling hungry. The teachers told them not to eat on the coach, but they were allowed to have a
drink. Marie searched in her backpack and found her drink – a bottle of fresh orange juice. “My dad squeezed the
oranges this morning,” she told Josie. “It's delicious.”
Suddenly, a car swerved in front of the coach. The driver slammed on the brakes and luckily he managed to avoid
an accident. Unfortunately, the sudden stop caused all of Marie's orange juice to spill down the front of her white
coat! She didn't have anything to clean it with and it was too cold to take her coat off, but she knew if she walked
around the museum like that all day, everyone would laugh at her. Luckily, her friend Josie was wearing a big scarf.
Her grandma knitted it for her from thick purple wool. She took it off and gave it to Marie. “Take this,” she told
Marie. “You can wear it to cover the orange juice on your coat.”
Once Marie put the scarf on, no one could see the mark. Her coat looked as good as new. Marie felt very grateful
that she had a good friend like Josie to help her out and she thanked her. “There's no need to say thank you,” Josie
told her. “I know you'd do the same for me. That's what friends are for, right? And we're best friends forever.”
