Lesson Objectives

- Finding x-intercepts and y-intercepts of quadratics

- Determine if a quadratic is upright/inverted
- Finding Coordinates of the turning point using axis of symmetry
- COMPLETE EXERCISE 5C Q1-Q7 From Unit Outline (Q8 onwards will be in part 2)

Finding the x-intercepts and y-intercept of a quadratic

Finding the coordinates of the Turning Point using the Axis of Symmetry

Turning Point - Where the parabola "turns around" (in the form of (x, y) a coordinate)
Axis of Symmetry - The equation that splits the parabola in half (in the form of x=____)

The Turning Point and Axis of Symmetry share a very important characteristic…the equation for the Axis
of Symmetry gives you the x-coordinate of the Turning Point. That is because the Axis of Symmetry cuts
your parabola exactly in half, and the Turning Point is the point on the parabola that the graph start to
turn or change direction.

Domain and Range of Quadratics

Domain
The Domain of a quadratic represents all possible values for x for a given Quadratic
Equation. Now because we know quadratics continue on forever, you can substitute
ANY REAL NUMBER for x and get a solution for y.
SO the Domain of a Quadratic can be shown by:

Domain: R
R represents Real Numbers.

Range
The Range of a quadratics represents all possible values for y for a given quadratic
Equation. Unlike the Domain, the range stops at the "Turning Point" of a quadratic, as
the graph never continues past the turning point. We use inequalities to show the
Range of a quadratic.

Range: y ≥ -17
**The inequality sign depends on the quadratic**

Range: y ≤ 5

Worded Problems - CAS Tutorial

A golf ball is hit from the top of a tower that is 24 m high. The ball
follows a parabolic path
defined by the function, ℎ = −5 2 + 14 + 24, where represents the
time in seconds
since the ball was hit, and ℎ represents the height of the ball above
the ground in metres.

a) Sketch this graph and label all important points

b) What is the y-intercept, and what does it represent?

c) What was the MAXIMUM height the ball reached?

d) How long did the ball take to reach its maximum height?

e) How high was the golf ball off the ground after 3 seconds?
