T - Worksheet-4 - Scientific Notation (Week13)

The document discusses scientific notation, which is used to write very large or very small numbers in a compact form. In scientific notation, a number is written as c × 10n, where c is between 1 and 10 and n is an integer exponent. Examples show how to write numbers in scientific notation and perform calculations using the laws of exponents. Practice problems involve converting between standard and scientific notation, performing calculations, and using scientific notation in a word problem about land area comparisons.

Scientific notation

Scientific notation:

In science, many of the things measured or calculated involve numbers that are either very
large or very small. As a result, it is inconvenient to write out such long numbers or to perform
calculations long hand. In addition, most calculators do not have enough window space to be
able to show these long numbers. To remedy this, we have available a short hand method of
representing numbers called scientific notation.

We use Scientific notation to write very large numbers or very small numbers.

A number is in Scientific Notation when it is written in the form 𝒄 × 𝟏𝟎𝒏 , where c is a

number between 1 & 10 (𝟏 ≤ 𝒄 ≤ 𝟏𝟎) and n is an integer.

Eg: 78000000 =7.8 × 107

0.0000057=5.7 × 10−6

1.Write in Scientific Notation.

a. 0.72 b. 723,000

c. 1,060,000,000 d. 0.0000256

e. 82.5 f. -0.0324

2. Write in Standard Form (ordinary /normal form).

a. 7.5  10
4
b. 1.36 10
7

8
c. 1.235 10 d. 8.9 10
4

e. 4.98 10 f. 6.35 10
