Infographic analysis

Text 1 chosen!!!
The infographic above has been produced by the UK Chief Medical Officers, as a method to
communicate the new Physical Activity Guidelines of the year 2019. Considering that the
infographic is promoting physical activities for children under the age of 5, it can be derived
that the intended audience was parents with toddlers. Just from a quick glance at the
infographic, there are many things that can be picked out to see how the interplay of text
and images has been used to appeal to the audience. Keeping that in mind, this essay will be
diving deep into the same.

As an audience member, the repeated use of clipart and imperative verbs, along with the
restrictive use of heavy text blocks, appeals to the “child” in me. Clipart is usually used to
simplify the message that the creators are hoping to send across. Looking at the infographic,
it is evident that clipart has been used in a surplus of 20 times. The clipart has also been
strategically placed right next to imperative verbs like “skip”, “play”, and “dance”.
Imperative verbs are used to give orders, hence they usually create a sense of dictation. The
use of imperative verbs with the clipart creates an assertive tone. However, in contrast to
that, the lack of heavy and complex textual elements, the tone of the text is softened and
creates an odd feeling of affection in my mind as a viewer. If I look at the infographic from a
parental perspective, even though the imperative words might come off as assertive, the
lively clipart, in a sense, “dumbs down” the overall message. Putting this all together, the
infographic aims to persuade parents of children between the ages of 1-5 to engage their
kids in physical activity, and the infographic does so by appealing to the “child” in the
parents as well. This creates an overall comforting and trust-filled environment.

Furthermore, the colour scheme used in the infographic includes colours that are soft on the
eyes, yet not dull. Orange is usually a colour that is extremely vibrant and is used to make
elements in a visual text “pop”. However, in this particular situation, the colour is light on
the eyes. The same goes for the use of cyan green and yellow. The fact that these colours
have been used with a grey background, one that usually comes along with negative
connotations of being “lifeless”, creates a sort of visual oxymoron. The colours that are
usually found to be extremely bright and “positive” have been reduced in their brightness
and the colours that are seen as “negative” give a sense of ease to the eye. The opposing
use of these colours has more likely than not been made to relax the reader. One could
conclude that similar to the use of clipart, the purpose of this is to appeal to the “child” in a
parent. Since kids of that young age are easily disturbed by excessively bright colours, the
colours have been made easy to look at for longer times and release the viewer from strain.

In addition to that, the use of bolded text and the larger font size has been thought of in an
extremely clever way. Given the fact that the target audience is parents of toddlers, one
could presume that an excessive amount of text could increase the pressure on the reader
and cause unnecessary stress. This is why all the key information that is needed to get a
general idea of the infographic has been bolded and written in larger font sizes as compared
to the rest of the text. A great example of this can be seen in the infographic through the
line, “180 minutes per day”. This line consists of only four words but successfully
communicates the suggested time duration for which a child between the ages of 1-5 should
be physical. The lack of a lot of text also contributes to the easy comprehensive tone that
the infographic is consistent with.
To conclude, the infographic uses clipart, imperative verbs, chromatography and other
elements to create a mellow tone for the parents that are the intended audience.
Moreover, the language and visual elements used in the infographic, appeal to the “child” in
a parent to help build trust in the information being provided by the infographic. This has
been done so that more and more parents use the information provided and implement it in
the upbringing of their own toddler.
