Task 01

This document is a lab manual for an introduction to computer networks course. It outlines the objectives of Lab 1 which are to introduce computer networks and provide an overview of IP addresses and connections. It defines what a computer network is and the purposes of networking. It describes common networking devices like routers, switches, hubs and network interface cards. It lists the goals of networking like resource sharing, reduced costs, reliability, scalability, communication and information access. It provides commands to check the IP address and use ping on Windows. It outlines tasks for Lab 1 on finding the IP address, explaining ping, listing goals of networking and creating a network without problems.

Introduction to Computer Network
and Overview IP address and Connections

Lab Manual 01
Objectives:
 Introduction to Computer Network
 Overview of Different Devices and Connections

a) Introduction to Computer Network.

 A computer network is a group of devices connected with each other through a transmission medium such
as wires, cables etc. These devices can be computers, printers, scanners, Fax machines etc.
 The purpose of having computer network is to send and receive data stored in other devices over the
network.
 To create network we require Routers, Switches, Hub, Servers, End Devices, Firewalls, And Multi user
environment support, so one can easily perform a large activity with its group members or partners on two
computers.

b) Goal Of Networking:

 Programs do not have to execute on a single system because of resource and load sharing.
 Reduced costs – Multiple machines can share printers, tape drives, and other peripherals.
 Reliability – If one machine fails, another can take its place.
 Scalability (it’s simple to add more processors or computers)
 Communication and mail (people living apart can work together)
 Information Access (remote information access, access to the internet, e-mail, video conferencing,
and online shopping)
 Entertainment that is interactive (online games, videos, etc.)
 Social Networking

c) Devices use for Networking:

Network Internet Card (NIC):

The network card operates as a middleman between a computer and a data network. For example, when a user
requests a webpage, the computer will pass the request to the network card, which converts it into electrical
impulses. A web server on the internet receives the impulses and responds by sending the webpage back to the
network card as electrical signals. The card gets these signals and translates them into the data that the computer
displays.

End Devices

The network devices that people are most familiar with are called end devices. These devices
form the interface between the human network and the underlying communication network.
Some examples of end devices are:

d) Commands use to check Network on Windows:

IP Address:

An Internet Protocol address is a numerical label such as 192.0.2.1 that is connected to a computer network that
uses the Internet Protocol for communication. An IP address serves two main functions: network interface
identification and location addressing.

Using Command:

Using Manual:

Ping Command:

Lab 01 Tasks
Task-1
Find out the Ip address of your device by using different methods (3) methods (command and
manual).

Task-2
Why ping command is use and how it helps us to understand the internet problem?

Task-3
Write down the key goals to create a network. How do you create a network without any
problem?

Task-4
What is a difference between Pi and Tw and how they are used for internet connection. Also
explain the TTL and its importance.
