Create LAN network
1) LAN- Local Area Network
A local area network is a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited
area such as a residence, school, laboratory, university campus or office building. By contrast, a
wide area network not only covers a larger geographic distance, but also generally involves
leased telecommunication circuits.

TASK 2:- Create WAN network


2) WAN- Wide Area Network
A wide area network is a telecommunications network that extends over a large geographic
area. Wide area networks are often established with leased telecommunication circuits.

TASK 3:- Create MAN network


3) MAN- Metropolitan Area Network
A metropolitan area network is a computer network that interconnects users with computer
resources in a geographic region of the size of a metropolitan area.

TASK 4:- Create PAN network


4) PAN- Personal Area Network
A personal area network is a computer network for interconnecting electronic devices within
an individual person's workspace. A PAN provides data transmission among devices such as
computers, smartphones, tablets and personal digital assistants.

OBJECTIVE-
Part 1:- Capture & Analyze local ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) Data in wireshark
• Start and stop data capture of ping traffic to local hosts

OBJECTIVE-
Part 1:- Observe the DNS Conversion of a URL to an IP address
Part 2:- Observe DNS lookup using the Ns lookup Command on a website
Part 3:- Observe the DNS lookup using the Ns lookup command on mail servers
REQUIRED RESOURCES
1PC(Windows 7,Vista, or XP with internet and command prompt access)

Open a command prompt window, type ipconfig/all, and press enter.

STEP 2: START WIRESHARK AND SELECT APPROPRIATE INTERFACE

PART 2: CAPTURE/ LOCATE/ EXAMINE PACKETS

AIM- Using Wireshark to Examine a UDP DNS Capture.


OBJECTIVE
Part 1: Record a PC’s IP configuration Information
Part 2: Use Wireshark to Capture DNS Queries and responses
Part 3: Analyse Captured DNS or UDP packets.
TOPOLOGY

REQUIRED RESOURCES
1PC (Windows 7 or 8 with access to command prompt, internet access and Wireshark)
PART 1: Record a PC’s IP configuration Information
Open CMD and type ipconfig/all to note down all IP and MAC addresses
PART 2: Use wireshark to capture the DNS Queries and Responses
In part 2 you will set up Wireshark to capture DNS query and response packets to demonstrate
the use of UDP transport protocol while communicating with a DNS server
• Click the windows start button and navigate to the wireshark program.

• Select an interface for wireshark for capturing packets. Use the Interface list to chooses
the interface that is associated with the recorded PC IP and media access control (MAC)
addresses in Part 1.

• After selecting the desired interface, click Start to capture the packets.

Click filter DNS and find DNS packets


• Open a web browser and type www.google.com . Press enter to continue. Click Stop to
the wireshark capture when you see Google home page.

Part 3: Analyze the captured DNS or UDP packets


In part 3 you will examine the UDP packets that were generated when communicating with a
DNS server for the IP address for www.google.com and type in DNS in filter field to filter
DNS.
