The basic living conditions also (4) ............... as something of a shock. Pamela’s school was situated in a remote

The Red Planet

The planet Mars, often known as ‘The Red Planet’, can be seen from Earth (0)........IN....... the night sky without a
telescope. Its size and brightness varies greatly according to (13) ............... position. Countless books have been
written (14) ............... Mars. It has always held a fascination for people who are interested in the possibility of life on
other planets.

Until the first spacecraft visited Mars in 1965, it (15) ............... believed that there was water on the planet. But
photographs sent back to Earth did not support (16)............... belief.

Although astronomer Phelps stated in 1895 that ‘conditions are all favourable for life’, the truth (17) ............... that the
planet Mars would be unsuitable for human habitation, not (18) ............... due to a lack of water, but also
(19) ............... of the cold temperatures and high winds. Therefore, the possibility of humans (20) ............... foot on
the Red Planet in the (21) ............... future is unlikely.

It is possible, (22) ............... that there was life on the Red Planet in the past. Signs of riverbeds have been found -
now dried up, but perhaps they (23) ............... contained water. And where there’s water, there is always the
possibility of life. More research will be carried (24) ............... during future missions to Mars.

elements of a language is a natural result of the passage of time, but now that we all
live in a (27)................... village, this process is speeding up. And as language is an GLOBE
essential part of a people’s culture, if one disappears it is a terrible (28) ................... LOSE
for all humanity.
Sometimes local languages co-exist with the dominant language, but they are
(29)................... replaced as older speakers die and younger ones adopt what they EVENTUAL
consider to be the more (30)................... tongue. USE
Although interest in language (31) ................... is on the rise, many people have an PRESERVE
equally strong interest in stamping out (32)................... languages. It is essential, MINOR
therefore, for language (33) ................... language professionals and COMMUNE
(34)...................to work together to try to stop them from doing this. GOVERN
