Two Brothers
Long ago, there were two brothers called Akomi and Ombah. They were ambitious and
winning. Akomi, the elder brother, said, "If we become the King's employees, we can make laws
to collect more money from the people. We will become very rich."
They went to see King Aruya. Akomi said, "Your Majesty, let us be your ministers. We
will make good laws. All your subjects will be happy. I am wise and clever. I know everything."
King Aruya said angrily, "That is not true! Nobody knows everything. For example, do
you know how many stars there are in the sky? Guards! Throw this liar into the river of
crocodiles!"
Ombah's hands trembled. Then he thought to himself, "King Aruya will also punish me if
I say the wrong thing. My brother said he knew everything and his answer was wrong. So if I say
the opposite, my answer will be right." Ombah then said, to King Aruya, "Your majesty, I know
nothing."
King Aruya said, "That is also a lie. Nobody knows nothing, truly! Everybody knows at
least something. For example, you know your father's name, don't you? Guards! Throw him into
the river of crocodiles, too!"

a little while he was tired and they rested under a tree. When he woke up from his nap he could
not see the donkey and started searching for the donkey everywhere. On the way he met a boy,
he asked the boy, “Have you seen my donkey?” The boy asked, “Is the donkey” left eye blind,
his right foot lame and is he carrying a load of wheat?” The man was happy and said, “Yes,
exactly! Where have you seen it?” the boy answered “I haven’t seen it.” This made the man very
angry and he took the boy to the village chief for punishment.
The judge asked, “Dear boy, if you had not seen the donkey, how could you describe it?”
The boy answered, “I saw the tracks of a donkey and the right and left tracks were different from
this. I understood that the donkey that passed there was limping. And the grass on the right side
of the road was eaten but the grass on the left was not. From that I understood that his left eye
was blind. There were wheat seeds scattered on the ground and I understood that he must have
been carrying a load of wheat. The judge understood the boy's cleverness and told the man to

The Fox and the Sick Lion
An old lion realized one day that he was too tired to hunt for his prey anymore. Sadly he
went home to his den knowing that soon he would die. But before he lay down he stopped at the
entrance, breathing with great difficulty. Speaking in slow, low voice he told the world of his sad
condition.
The news of the lion’s illness soon spread throughout the forest and caused mush concern
among the other beats. One by one they came to visit him and paid their respects. However, the
lion’s age had also made him wily, and as each animal entered his lair and came within reach,
they fell an easy prey to the lion, who soon grew fat.
One day early in the morning, the fox came. He was renowned for his cunning, and
approached the den carefully. Standing some distance away he inquired after the lion that looked
healthy and asked him if he was feeling better. “Ah, my dearest friend ,said the lion ”Is it you? I
can hardly see you, you are so far away. Come closer, please and give me some words of
consolation for I have not long to live,”
The fox, meanwhile, had been looking closely at the ground in front of the lion’s den. At
last he looked up, and turning to go. He remarked: “Bless you, but excuse me if I do not stay, for,
to tell the truth, I feel quite uneasy at the many footsteps I see leading into your den yet none do I
see emerging.”
A milk-maid had been in the meadow to milk her cows. Now she was returning home
with a pail of milk on her head.
She thought, “I will make cream and butter out of this milk. Then after selling them, I
will buy eggs. And when they hatch, I shall have a good poultry farm”.
She further thought, "I shall sell some of my chickens and buy a fine dress. Seeing it on
my body at the party, all the boys will admire me. But I will turn them away”.
She went on day dreaming; she forgot about the pail her head. She moved her head
suddenly and the pail of milk came tumbling down. It was broken and all the milk split. “Dear, O
dear!” she cried, “I have lost mine all”
An ant went to the river to get a drink. The water rushed so fast that he was washed off
from the bank into the river.
"I shall drown" he cried. " Help! Help! Help!", but his voice was so tiny that it couldn't be heard.
A dove was sitting on the tree hanging over the water. She saw the ant struggling and
quickly nipped off a leaf and let it fall into the water. The ant climbed upon it and floated down
the river until the leaf was washed upon the bank of the river.
The ant called out in its tiny voice. 'Thank you, kind dove, you have saved my life", but of course
the dove couldn't hear him
Several days after it warded, the dove was again sitting on the tree, a hunter crept
carefully up to the tree. His gun was pointed at the dove and he was about to shoot, when he was
bitten in the leg by an ant.
He cried out with pain and dropped his gun. This frightened the dove, and she flew away.
" thank you, kind ant" cooed the dove. The ant heard it and happy that he could help her.
