Unit 3 Polymer Chemistry

1. The molecular weight of polymers can be determined using viscosity measurements of polymer solutions. 2. Viscosity depends on the intermolecular attractive forces between molecules in a liquid. The viscosity increases with increasing molecular mass of the polymer molecules in solution. 3. By measuring the relative and intrinsic viscosities of polymer solutions at different concentrations, the intrinsic viscosity [η] and molar mass Mw of the polymer can be calculated. This allows determination of the molecular weight of the polymer.
