Art Analysis

The portrait from 1915 uses bright colors like orange and green in a cubist style to depict three heads on one body. It shows contrast between darker and lighter versions of the colors which provides emphasis on the geometric shapes. The artist aims to convey the feeling of being incomplete within oneself through the contradictory colors and expressions used in the two halves of the portrait.

Kimberly

Portrait by Jeanne Rij Rousseau (1915)

The portrait created by Jean Rij in 1915 develops a prominent image based on bright

colors used. The artist forms duality among the choices of the colors he uses.As a result, this

creates contrast between colors ranging from bright orange to bright green. However, some of the

artwork provides darker colors. This generates an illusion of the human being formed in the

portrait.Darker and lighter versions of the same color provide emphasis to the geometric

structure given by the portrait in cubism form. For instance, features like the orange hand formed

in the artwork develops a distinction between the two halves of the figures made. The portrait is
2

able to develop a total of three different heads in the same body by using straight or curved lines

that go in different directions in order to form geometric shapes. The artist’s evaluation of the

artwork emphasizes specific references to synthetic cubism that is characterized by bright

colors, simple shapes, and a small amount of depth within the artwork. The portrait provides

emphasis on the color pink shown in the middle portion of the body based on the way the color is

used once.It is noticeable that the artist applies a non-tradiitonal technique of perspective.Instead

of forming an illusion by receding in depth, the artist provides multiple perspectives for the three

distinct figures by moving beyond the canvas in a two dimensional point of view. The abstract

artstyle from cubism was the basis for the advancing colors that the artist applies in the human

face of the portrait itself. This portrait is something that viewers are less likely to see in a

traditional technique of forshortening and imitation of real life.

Formal Analysis

Emphasis is provided in the green half of the portrait because the triangular shape differs

in size and dimension unlike the general shapes surrounding it.For example, asymmetrical

balance is used in the portrait based on the opposing angles that the orange and green faces are

pointing towards. In addition, asymmetrical balance is seen when the body position of the two

figures are equally even if they are not exactly matched proportionally.Pattern varies upon the

artwork because the geometric shapes differ from multiple angles. The patterns in the portrait are

influenced by the position of the figure itself. The method the artist relies on gives importance to

the general structure of the unrealistic human being. The portrait has a head that relies on

triangular and squared shapes for the formation of the hair.Based on the depiction of light and

dark complexity of the figure in the right side, contrast remains relevant. There’s a distinction
3

between the green and black half of the face.Likewise, the face on the left has a contrasting nature

based on the difference between orange and black.Based on this contrasting nature and the

artist’s use of a dark color, the illusion created is one where the faces seem as if they’re vanishing

gradually. Not only are the darker colors provided within the portrait’s face, but also in certain

parts of the background.Movement becomes noticeable based on focal oints including the artist’s

way of including a different size and dimension of the triangular shape seen in the right side of

the portrait.Likewise, the artist grabs the viewer’s attention by differentiating the black and green

halves of the face on the right.Instead of providing a arrangement of the shapes, the portrait

varies in darker and lighter versions of color and the size or position that the contrasting shapes

are found in.However, unity remains noticeable from the way the two halves of the portrait’s

body maintain a relation to each other despite the depiction of orange and green tones. If viewed

from side, orange and green are repeated. In addition,a combination of triangular and squared

shapes remain.

Interpretation:According to the way the artist provides a discontinuation of the same colors of

orange and green for both heads, the artist is trying to convey that people tend to feel incomplete

within themselves even if they’re trying to remain whole from their contradicting thoughts. The

reason I mention “Contradicting thoughts” is because it is that the two halves of the portrait are

contradicting in color. Also, the portrait provides particular attention to the different facial

expression used for the face on the left, which contrasts with the distorted view for the one on the

right. This generalizes the idea of the feeling of being “Incomplete” from the positive and

negative ways that the mind battles human emotion.

Evaluation
4

This portrait is a quality piece of art because it connects to its viewers by providing the

right interpretation that contributes to feelings of and unfulfillment within oneself. This is

conveyed by the artist’s way of managing contrasting shapes and colors. It compares to similar

artworks based on the way it resembles other portraits with the intention of connecting with

emotions and the viewers in an arbitrary manner from the use of shapes. For instance, the artwork

reminds me of picasso’s artwork of “The dream” based on a similar way the woman’s face

reflects an emotion even if they provide different effects in their portrait to interpret the

message. The artist is successful because of the way they are able to provide a unification of the

portraitdespite its contrasting shapes and colors. This means that the portrait’s overall

composition adds a greater meaning regarding the “wholeness” of a person to provide closure for

the audience.
