Critique and reaction

Reading this news article about the high price of rice in the Philippines has left

me feeling concerned and frustrated. The fact that Filipino households are paying

double to triple the prices paid by their counterparts in Thailand and Vietnam is

alarming, as it puts a significant burden on their budgets. This disparity has been

growing since the mid-1980s, and it seems that Filipino farmers are also incurring

higher costs of production than their counterparts in those countries.

The high cost of rice production is putting pressure on Filipino households, many

of whom are struggling to make ends meet. Hunger and malnutrition are becoming

more common, particularly in rural areas where poverty is most acute. The government

needs to address this issue by implementing policies that will help farmers increase

productivity and reduce costs, as well as by improving enforcement of import restrictions

to prevent smuggling and ensure that rice is available at affordable prices for all

Filipinos.

It's disheartening to see that the gap between the Philippines, on the one hand,

and Vietnam and Thailand, on the other, has been growing worse over time. This

highlights the need for urgent action to address this issue and ensure that Filipino

households have access to affordable rice. The government must prioritize the

development of agriculture and provide support to farmers to help them increase

productivity and reduce costs. This will not only benefit farmers but also help to alleviate

poverty and hunger in rural areas.

Moreover, the high price of rice is exacerbated by smuggling, which is rampant

due to lax enforcement of import restrictions. This needs to be addressed urgently to

prevent smuggling and ensure that rice is available at affordable prices for all Filipinos.

The government must also explore ways to improve access to credit and other

resources for farmers, as this will help them to invest in modern farming methods and

technologies that can help to reduce costs and increase productivity.

In conclusion, the high price of rice in the Philippines is a serious issue that

requires urgent attention from the government. It’s time for action to address this issue

and ensure that Filipino households have access to affordable rice. This will require a

multifaceted approach that includes improving agricultural productivity, reducing costs

for farmers, improving enforcement of import restrictions, and providing support to

farmers through access to credit and other resources. It’s time for action, as hunger and

malnutrition are becoming more common in rural areas due to the high price of rice.
