Lab Worksheet 1 The Compound Microscope

This document provides information about the compound microscope and its parts. It discusses the objective lens, ocular lens, and how the total magnification is calculated. It also lists the major mechanical and optical parts of the microscope and their functions. Finally, it poses questions for further research about microscopy terms and how to properly use the microscope.

INTRODUCTION

Microbiology is the study of microscopic living creatures such as viruses, bacteria, fungus, and parasites. Because
these creatures are undetectable to the naked eye, a microscope is a very useful instrument for seeing them. A
compound microscope is a type of optical equipment. It's used to magnify tiny items. It has two lenses: the objective
lens and the ocular or eyepiece lens. The magnification is the number of times an item has been magnified, and the total
magnification is calculated by multiplying the magnifying power of the objective lens by the magnifying power of the
ocular.

A microscope's resolving power, often known as resolution, is an essential component in addition to

magnification. Resolution is the capacity of the lenses to recognize two different things at a given distance away as two
distinct objects. A compound microscope has a resolution of 0.2 um, which is 1,000 times greater than the human eye.
