START
WHAT IS A STORY?
Story is a narration of events in the life of a person, a
thing, or an event itself. It usually has a goal which is to
convey a lesson that the readers will learn at the end of
the story.
ELEMENTS OF A SHORT STORY

SETTING PLOT
1. THEME
It is the concept and main idea of the author when
writing a story. It tells us what the story is about.

ex. Love Family Forgiveness

2. SETTING
It is the time and location where the story takes place.

ex. forest Hogwarts World War II

3. CHARACTERS

They are the ones who act, and do the dialogue in a story.
It can be a person, animal, creature, or thing.
TYPES OF CHARACTERS
Protagonist - the main character who is the focus of the
story.
Antagonist - the villain of the story.
Supporting Characters - a character who supports the
protagonist or the antagonist. Also known as “side kick.”
4. CONFLICT
It is the challenge or problem that a character
faces in the story.
TYPES OF CONFLICT:

INTERNAL CONFLICT EXTERNAL CONFLICT


INTERNAL CONFLICT
It is the struggle within one’s self. This takes place within the
minds of the characters. Also called “Man vs. Self”

Ex. Elsa of Frozen - Elsa had a conflict with her own fear.
Joker - he struggles with his mental illness.
EXTERNAL CONFLICT
It is the struggle outside one’s self. This conflict occurs
between a character and an external force.
Man vs. Man - an external struggle between two
characters.

Ex. Superman vs. Batman, Ironman vs. Captain America, Harry


Potter vs. Voldemort
Man vs. Society - an external struggle between a
character and a social force produced by society.

Ex. Shrek - he struggled with society’s acceptance of him.


Mulan - she struggled with Chinese traditions and beliefs
about gender law.
Man vs. Nature - this is an external struggle between a
character and a natural obstacle or natural condition.

Ex. Moana - to make it past the waves, she struggles with the
ocean.
5. PLOT
- This is the sequence of connected events
that make up a narrative in a story.
5 PARTS OF PLOT

FREYTAG’S PYRAMID
Exposition - is the beginning of a story. Characters and
setting are introduced.

Ex.
- Once upon a time, a girl named Cinderella lives with her
stepsisters and stepmother in a castle.
Rising Action - this is when the story becomes
complicated and conflicts are revealed.
Ex.
- The stepsisters got an invitation to the ball. They left
Cinderella at home because she has nothing to wear.
- But a fairy godmother shows up and helps Cinderella.
She finally goes to the ball and dances with the prince.
- She hurriedly went home at exactly 12 midnight and
then lost her shoes.
Climax - is the highest point of a story. It is the
most important and exciting moment in a story.

Ex.
- The prince went to their house to find the girl who
had the missing pair of shoes.
- The stepsisters try to force their feet into the shoe.
- Finally, the shoe fits Cinderella.
Falling Action - this is the period after the climax.
This usually leads to the denouement resolution
part.

Ex.
- Cinderella and the Prince got married.
Resolution or Denouement - the conclusion or
the end of the story.

Ex.
- And they live happily ever after.
