DepED DEPARTMENT I OF EDUCATION ALS Learning Activity Sheet Learning Strand 1: Communication Skills ENGLISH Writing a Composition SDO - ILOILO CITYLearning Activity Sheets (LAS) Name of Learner: Date: ENGLISH ACTIVITY SHEE Title: Writing a Composition Learning Competency and Code: LSCIC5-EN-16-PSE-AS-27 > Write a composition with correctly sequenced paragraphs using appropriate paragraph/sentence structure and correct grammar, Punctuation, capitalization, and spelling to talk about oneseff, country, and the worl. Il, Background Information for Learners Acoording to Holdgreve-Resendez (2010), composition and writing is an essential tool in literacy, education, and most importantly communication. Composition and writing allow people to convey ideas, feelings, emotions, opinions, political views, arguments and many other forms of communication. It also increases understanding and helps the process of learning. The elements of good writing are: grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. By mastering the rules and conventions, you will make your writing easier to understand and more enjoyable for your readers. Getting your main points together can be a challenge, and one solution is to put together a draft of main ideas before writing. Exercise 1. Read the letter and test your knowledge in writing. There are 13 grammatical mistakes to find in the example. List down the 13 errors on a separate sheet of paper and rewrite the entire composition. Dear Jane, I was delighted to read you're letter last week. Its always a pleasure to reci test news and to here that you and your family had a great summer. We spent last week at the beach and had so much fun on the sand and in the water exploring the coast we weren't prepared for the rains that came at the end of the vacation. The best parts of the trip was the opportunities to sightsee and relax. My kids are back in school to. I find their are less things to worry about now that the kids are at school all day. There is plenty of fun things to do in the summer, but by ‘August, I've running out of ideas. I've excepted the fact that we'll have to think up brand-new activities next summer; hoping to round up some creative ideas soon. ‘Thanks again for your letter! Sincerely, Karen 3 R@BISCO The printing of this module isa joint effort of Rebisco and SDO lloio City - Allemative Leaming SystemIl. Activity Proper A What is composition writing? Composition is the act of writing, but the word can also refer to a piece of ‘writing or the product of the process of writing. There are three main parts in a composition: 4. Introduction ‘The first paragraph is often an introduction —a paragraph that introduces the topic, says something interesting about it, and states the thesis or main idea of the composition. You can get a reader's attention by telling a story, asking a question, pointing out something strange or interesting, providing and discussing an interesting quote, among others. Thesis Statement. A thesis statement clearly identifies the topic being discussed, includes the points discussed in writing, and is written for a specific audience. It is the main idea of your composition. 2. Body Following the introduction are several paragraphs called the body. A body paragraph is any paragraph in the middle of an essay, paper, or article that comes after the introduction but before the conclusion. Topic Sentence. A topic sentence is a sentence that introduces a paragraph by presenting the one topic that will be the focus of that paragraph. It gives the main idea at the paragraph level. The rest of the paragraph then supports that topic. Supporting Details. These are reasons, examples, facts, steps, or other kinds of evidences that explain the main idea. Major details explain and develop the main idea. Minor details help make the major details clear. 3. Conclusion (Summary) This is your composition’s concluding paragraph, summing up or reasserting your original point in light of the supporting evidence. It reconnects to the introduction and summarizes the evidence. .. Writing an Outline In the context of an essay, an outline is basically a plan that you create to follow when you're writing. Why should you write an outline? It gives a structure and focus following a coherent flow and gives order to your ideas. |. Introduction ‘A.
