This lesson plan teaches students about combinations through group activities and examples. The objectives are for students to describe combinations of distinct objects, solve word problems involving combinations, and participate cooperatively in groups. Students will work in groups on a "Yes or No" activity to identify combinations, then the teacher will explain the combination formula and provide examples. Students will then work in groups on sample problems applying combinations. Finally, students will complete individual problems assessing their understanding of combinations.

A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Grade 10 Mathematics

4A’s Method

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to:
a. describe what is combination of the distinct objects;
b. solve word problems involving combinations ; and
c. show teamwork and cooperation through active participation in group activities
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic: Combination (combination of n objects)
B. References: Mathematics Learner’s module Grade 10 pp. 188-194
https://www.investopedia.com/terms/p/combination.asp
C. Learning Materials: Visual aids
D. Grade level: 10
III. Learning Procedures
A. Preparatory Activity
A. Preliminary Activities
 Prayer
The teacher asks one student to lead the prayer.
 Greetings
The teacher greets the students.
 Checking of attendance
The teacher checks and records the attendance of the
students.
 Review

a. The teacher asks a student what was the lesson

yesterday.

b. The teacher ask volunteers to explain

 Motivation
“Arrange Me”
-The class will be divided into 5 groups. Given the scrambled
words, arranged them to find the answer.

1.) Permutation
2.) Arrangements
3.) Objects
4.) Distinguishable
5.) Conditional

B. Lesson Proper
a) Activity
 “YES or NO” (10-15 minutes)
 The teacher will group the students into 5. Each
groups will be given bond papers and markers.
 The teacher read a situation or word problems and
students need to identify if the given situation is
“Combination or Not”.
 The groups that get the highest score will give a
prices.
b) Analysis
 The teacher will ask questions regarding the activity.
1) How did you identify combination?
2) What have you understand about combination based on our
activity?
3) What do you think is our topic for today?
c) Abstract
 “COMBINATIONS”

-is a mathematical technique that determine the number of possible

arrangements in a collection of items where the “order of the
selection does not matter.” The formula for combination of n objects
taken r at a time is given by:
n!
P(n,r) =
r ! ( n− r ) !
n=total number of objects
r= the number of objects taken at a time

Examples:

1.) Kyle is going on a vacation trip and he needs to bring two t-

shirts. He has the t-shirts with colors; red, blue, violet, green and
yellow. How many possible combinations of t-shirts can Kyle
bring.
n!
P(n,r) = When; n=5, r=2
r ! ( n− r ) !
5!
P(5,2)=
2! ( 5 − 2 ) !
5!
=
2! 2 !
5x 4 x 3 x2 x1
=
2 x 1. 2 x 1
120
=
4
P(5,2)= 30 ways

2.) In how many ways can a committee of 4 members be formed

from 8 people?

n!
P(n,r) = when; n=8, r= 4
r ! ( n− r ) !
8!
P(8,4)=
4 !(8 − 4 )!
8!
=
4!. 4!
8 x7 x6 x 5 x4 x3 x2 x1
=
4 x3 x2 x1.4 x 3x 2 x1
40,320
=
576

P(8,4) = 70 ways

d) Application
 The class will be divided into 4 groups with the number of
members varying. They will be given different problems
 After the time given to answer, each group will choose a
representative to present their answer.
1.) For a teacher’s program 6 items are proposed, due the time constant, only 4 times
will be approved. How many combination of 4 items program are there?
2.)There are 8 basketball teams competing for the top 4 standings in order to move up
to the semi-finals, Find the numbers of possible rankings of the four top teams.
3.) There are 25 students in a club. How many ways can 5 officers be selected?
4.) The teacher prepared 15 item questions for recitation. How many ways can a
student select 5 questions at random?
IV. Evaluation
A. The teacher will ask the student to get one whole sheet of paper. (individual
activity )
B. Find the linear permutation of the following.
1.) For a research study, 3 people are chosen at random from group of 10
people. In how many ways can this be done?
2. ) Alex would like to invite 9 friends to go on a trip but has a room for 6 of
them. In how many ways can they be chosen?
3. ) How many different 2 letter words can be created from the distinct letters
such as A, B, C, D, E and F?

V. Assignment

In your activity notebook, create 1 situation about combination then answer the
problem that you have created.
