Learning Objectives: SVA

1. Students will be able to add and subtract Problem solving, Responsibility, Enquirer
fractions.
2. Students will be able to solve word Key Words
problems related to addition and
Fractions, Addition, Subtraction, Numerator,
subtraction of fractions.
Denominator, Lowest common multiple,
Equivalent fractions, Common Denominator,
Like fractions, Unlike Fractions
Subtracting Like Fractions
If the fractions have a common denominator, just subtract the
Numerator.

Subtracting Unlike Fractions
If the fractions don’t have a common denominator, get a
common denominator by finding the Lowest Common Multiple

Step 1. Observe the fractions, check for like fractions.

Step 2 . If fractions are like- add or subtract the numerator. DONE

Step 3. if the Fractions are unlike ....then make the denominators the
same by finding the least common multiple of their denominators.

Step 4. Rewrite each fraction into its equivalent fraction with a


denominator which is equal to the LCM found in step 3.

Step 5. Now add or subtract the new fractions.

Monday. What fraction of the book has she read and what
fraction has she left?
Word problems
3. A Science teacher had ⅔ of a litre of salt water. He used ⅓
of the salt water for an experiment. How much salt water does
the teacher have left?

4. Michael jogged around a park for ¾ of an hour and Joey


jogged around a park for ¼ of an hour. How much longer did
Michael jog than Joey?
Workings
1. ⅖ +⅕ = ⅗ is spent and ⅖ is left.
2 . 4/6 + ⅙ = ⅚ is completed and ⅙ is left.

3. ⅔ - ⅓ = ⅓ is left.

4. ¾ - ¼ = 2/4 or ½ of an hour longer.
