Course Description:
Chinese Calligraphy 1000 is an introductory course that teaches the fundamental techniques and
aesthetic values of Chinese Calligraphy. The object of this course is to encourage students to develop a
deeper interest and understanding of the Chinese language and its culture through the practice of
Chinese calligraphy. Students with no previous knowledge or experiences of Chinese or calligraphy are
welcome. While learning Chinese calligraphy in this course, not only will we study its history,
development, cultural context, and basic styles, we will also learn to pronounce each character and know
its meaning, usage, and relationship with other characters. The hands-on practice in class will allow
students to put their knowledge into use to produce Chinese calligraphy. In each class we will fist, learn
about the origin, development and cultural context of selected characters. Then, we will learn the
meaning and the pronunciation of each character and its nuances when used in combination with other
characters in word and phrases. We will then practice writing characters. The selected in-class practice
characters will then become the weekly brush writing homework.
