1. INTRODUCTION
wPTU TM Toolbox is a software program which, when installed on a laptop computer,
provides diagnostic capability and the ability to download software or upload data for Off
Highway Vehicle (OHV) applications. wPTU TM Toolbox can be used on AC or DC trucks.
Requirements for the laptop computer are as follows:
1. 500 Mhz processor speed, minimum
2. 128 MB RAM, minimum
3. 100 MB available disk space
4. an available built–in RS–232 port
5. a standard serial cable with DB–9 male connector on one end and DB–9 female connector on
the other end.

2. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
NOTE: To download the software from the web, save the file setup.exe and then click on it
to launch installation.
To install the software from a CD, insert the CD containing the wPTU TM Toolbox files into
the computer’s CD drive. If the computer is configured to auto launch CD’s, the setup
program will launch automatically. If it does not, browse to the CD drive and click on the file
setup.exe.

1. Click on Next to continue (Fig. 1).

Figure 10 SPLASH SCREEN SHOWING THE VERSION NUMBER OF wPTU TOOLBOX

When wPTU TM Toolbox is started, a Splash screen (Figure 10) displays the version of the
wPTU application. After a few seconds, the Startup screen (Figure 11) appears.
Connection Status is shown in the center blue display window (Figure 12). A field for
password entry is provided. The functions available from the Startup screen are discussed
in section 3.2.

NORMAL MODE AND LOGIN

In the Normal mode, wPTU TM Toolbox communicates with the target (a computer in the
truck’s vehicle control system). wPTU TM Toolbox waits for a connection to be established
and a correct password to proceed beyond the Startup screen. To start in Normal mode,
use the following procedure:
1. Connect a serial cable between the laptop computer and the truck.
2. Select the ‘Normal’ radio button.
3. Wait for the connection status message.
4. Enter the password in the password field.
5. Click ’LOGIN to wPTU Toolbox’ or press <Enter>.
6. The Main Window is displayed. The Title bar shows information regarding the
connecting port and the baud rate.

wPTU TM Toolbox will attempt to connect using all COM ports and all baud settings until a
connection is established.
wPTU TM Toolbox communicates with the target through a RS–232 serial link. A strict
protocol is followed to keep wPTU TM Toolbox and the target synchronized during
communication. The communication parameters for a specific target may be configured
using the Options menu.

Statex III Drive System Training 15 Draft March 06

General Electric – Consumer & Industrial

OFFLINE MODE AND LOGIN

In the Offline mode, wPTU TM Toolbox does not communicate with the target. If a
connection has already been established in Normal mode, wPTU TM Toolbox can transition
to Offline mode by selecting the radio button in the Startup screen. This stops all
communication with the target.

Use the following procedure to start in Offline mode.

1. Select the ‘Offline’ radio button.

2. Wait for the Status message ‘Offline Mode’ (Figure 13).

3. Enter password in the password field.

4. Click ’LOGIN to wPTU Toolbox’ or press <Enter>. A typical list of truck types is displayed . The
type of trucks shown is dependent on the application.

5. Choose the truck type and select ‘OK’ or press <Enter>. The Main Window is displayed.

(Figure 11) of the DC PTU,
ensure the DC System is
selected.
2. Enter the password and
select Program Panel button.
The Startup screen is
replaced by the screen shown
in
3. Figure 15. The default
target file names and baud
rate will be automatically loaded. The settings may be changed as needed.
3. Browse and choose a CFG file (
4. Figure 15).

5. Press OK. The panel

programming starts. The
status of each step, as it
is being done, can be
seen. If there are any
errors, it will be displayed
in the message box

6. When he programming
is complete, the message
‘Panel programmed
successfully. You may
disconnect the cable now’
is displayed.

Figure 15 PROGRAMMING DOWNLOAD UTILITY

NOTE: Though wPTU Toolbox has

built–in error–recovery schemes, it
is not advisable to disconnect the
cable while programming is in
progress. Ensure that there is a
minimum of ten minutes battery life
available before starting a program
panel operation. The program panel
operation may request the user to
cycle power.

OPTIONS

Under the options selection

there are three tab options
available.
1. Baud Tab
2. Port Tab
3. Mode Tab

1. BAUD TAB
The Baud tab allows the
user to set the Toolbox
communication speed.
wPTUTM Toolbox is capable
of communicating at any of
the standard baud rates. The
sequence of baud rates to be tried when wPTUTM Toolbox starts up can be specified. The
default baud rate for DC trucks is 9600.

Go to Options –> Baud on the Startup screen for this setting (Figure 18).

General Electric – Consumer & Industrial

2. PORT TAB

wPTUTM Toolbox can communicate through the COM1 through COM8 serial ports on the laptop
computer. wPTUTM Toolbox can be configured to search the ports for a target connection in a
specified order. (For example, if the search order is specified as COM2, COM1, wPTU first looks for
a target connection at COM2. If COM2 is already being used or not found, it tries COM1.) The
default port is COM1 or COM2.

Go to Options –> Port on the Startup screen for this setting (Figure 19).

3.3. PASSWORD ENTRY

All users must enter a valid
password to use wPTU TM
Toolbox. GETS or the OEM
can provide a valid pass-
word. The password is
case sensitive. After
entering the password, press
<Enter> OR click on the

the entered password has
privileges compatible with the
specific truck type with which
the wPTU TM Toolbox
application is connected, the
Main Window will be
displayed.

Refer to Password Utility,

Section 5 of this publication,
for further information about creating and maintaining passwords.

3.4. MAIN WINDOW

The Main Window (Fig. 22) consists of the following elements :

1. Window Browser on left panel
2. Title bar on extreme top
3. Menu bar just below the Title bar
4. Tool bar below the menu bar
