Meter Bridge Resistance of A Wire

The document describes using a metre bridge to determine the resistance of an unknown wire. The metre bridge operates using Wheatstone's principle with four resistors (P, Q, R, and S) connected in a bridge circuit. When balanced, the ratio of the resistances in each arm is equal to the ratio of the lengths of the bridge wire in each arm. This allows calculating the resistance of the unknown resistor R by measuring the balance point length on the metre bridge. The experiment is performed and the unknown resistance is calculated and reported along with sources of error like non-uniform wire resistance or heating effects.

Metre Bridge-Resistance of a wire

Our Objective:
To find the resistance of a given wire using a metre bridge .

Theory
Wheatstone’s principle

The metre bridge operates under Wheatstone’s principle. Here, four resistors P, Q, R, and S are
connected to form the network ABCD. The terminals A and C are connected to a battery, and the
terminals C and D are connected to a galvanometer through keys 𝐾1 and
𝐾2 respectively.
In the balancing condition, there is no
deflection on the galvanometer. Then,

Metre Bridge apparatus

The metre bridge, also known as the slide wire bridge consists of a one metre long wire of uniform
cross sectional area, fixed on a wooden block. A scale is attached to the block. Two gaps are formed
on it by using thick metal strips in order to make the Wheat stone’s bridge. The terminal B between
the gaps is used to connect galvanometer and jockey.
A resistance wire is introduced in gap S and the resistance box is in gap R. One end of the
galvanometer is connected to terminal D and its other end is connected to a jockey. As the jockey
slides over the wire AC, it shows zero deflection at the balancing point (null point).

If the length AB is , then the length BC is ( 100-l ).

Then, according to Wheatstone’s principle;

Now, the unknown resistance can be calculated as,

Result

Within the experimental error, the unknown value of resistance of the given wire is = ………

Precautions

1. The ends of the connecting wires should be rubbed and cleaned with a sand paper. The
connections should be neat, clean and tight.

2. The plugs 8n the resistance box should be pressed and tightened by screening them a little in
the clock wise direction.
To avoid any error due to non uniformity of the bridge wire the balance point should always be
obtained near the mid point of the wire.

Sources of Error

1. The wire of the meter bridge may not be of uniform area of cross section through out it’s entire
length .

2. The wire may get heated due to the passage of current and it’s resistance might change.
