QUESTION 1
10 GLOBAL ISSUES THAT CAN AFFECT FAMILIES AS AN
INSTITUTION:

1) Climate change: Climate change is a major threat to families

around the world, as it can lead to displacement, food insecurity, and
conflict. For example, families in low-lying coastal areas are at risk of
being displaced due to rising sea levels, while families in drought-
prone areas may experience food shortages. Climate change can also
exacerbate existing conflicts, as competition for resources intensifies.

2) Poverty: Poverty is a major global issue that can have a profound

impact on families. Families living in poverty often lack access to
basic necessities such as food, water, and shelter. They may also
have limited access to education and healthcare. These challenges
can make it difficult for families to provide for their children and give
them a good start in life.

3) Inequality: Inequality is another major global issue that can affect

families. Inequality can occur within countries, between countries,
and even within families. When families are unequal, it can lead to a
number of problems, such as social unrest, crime, and poor health
outcomes.

4) Conflict: Conflict is a devastating issue that can have a profound

impact on families. Families in conflict zones are often at risk of
violence, displacement, and loss of loved ones. Conflict can also
disrupt livelihoods and education, making it difficult for families to
provide for their children.
5) Displacement: Displacement is a major global issue that is affecting
families around the world. Families may be displaced due to conflict,
natural disasters, or economic hardship. Displacement can be a
traumatic experience that can have a long-lasting impact on families.

6) Food insecurity: Food insecurity is a major global issue that affects

billions of people around the world. Families that are food insecure
may not have enough food to eat, or they may not have access to
nutritious food. Food insecurity can lead to a number of problems,
such as malnutrition, stunted growth, and cognitive development
problems.

7) Water scarcity: Water scarcity is a major global issue that is

affecting families around the world. Families that lack access to clean
water are at risk of a number of health problems, such as diarrhea,
typhoid fever, and cholera. Water scarcity can also make it difficult
for families to grow food and earn a living.

8) Disease: Disease is a major global issue that can affect families

around the world. Families in developing countries are often at risk of
infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS.
These diseases can have a devastating impact on families, leading to
death, disability, and financial hardship.

9) Education: Education is a fundamental right that is essential for

families to prosper. However, millions of children around the world do
not have access to quality education. This can limit their opportunities
and make it difficult for them to find good jobs.
10) Healthcare: Healthcare is another fundamental right that is essential
for families to prosper. However, millions of people around the world
do not have access to quality healthcare. This can lead to a number
of problems, such as preventable deaths, chronic illness, and financial
hardship.

QUESTION 2A
DISCUSS SIX PRINCIPLES OF FAMILY PLANNING

Family planning is the process of deciding when and how many children
to have. It is a critical aspect of reproductive health and empowers
individuals and couples to make informed decisions about their families.

The principles of family planning are grounded in the fundamental right

of all individuals to determine their own reproductive lives.
a) Voluntary Choice: Family planning should be a voluntary
decision made by individuals and couples without coercion or
discrimination. They should have access to comprehensive
information about their reproductive options and the freedom to
choose the method that best suits their needs and preferences.

b) Informed Consent: Before making any family planning

decisions, individuals and couples should have access to accurate
and unbiased information about all available contraceptive
methods, their effectiveness, potential side effects, and the risks
and benefits of each option. They should also receive counseling
and support to make informed choices aligned with their personal
values and circumstances.
c) Access to Services: Family planning services should be
accessible, affordable, and of high quality. This includes providing
a wide range of contraceptive methods, including modern and
traditional methods, as well as counseling, education, and support
services. Services should be sensitive to cultural and religious
values and tailored to meet the specific needs of different
populations.

d) Empowerment and Rights: Family planning is integral to

women's empowerment and the realization of their human rights.
It enables women to take control of their reproductive lives,
pursue their education and careers, and participate fully in society.

e) Shared Responsibility: Family planning is a shared responsibility

between partners and within the family. It requires open
communication, mutual respect, and a supportive environment
where individuals feel comfortable discussing their reproductive
desires and making decisions together.

f) Quality and Safety: Family planning services should adhere to

the highest standards of quality and safety. Contraceptive methods
should be rigorously tested, proven to be effective, and have
minimal side effects. Service providers should be trained and
qualified to provide accurate information, counseling, and support.

g) Non-discrimination and Equity: Family planning services

should be available to all individuals and couples, regardless of
their age, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status,
socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, or any other personal
characteristic. Services should strive to eliminate disparities in
access and outcomes related to these factors.

h) Lifelong Perspective: Family planning is not a one-time decision

but an ongoing process that may need to be revisited and
adjusted over time as circumstances change. Individuals and
couples should have access to ongoing support and guidance to
make informed decisions throughout their reproductive lives.

i) Community Engagement: Family planning efforts should

involve active community engagement to address local needs,
cultural sensitivities, and barriers to access. Community members
can play a crucial role in promoting family planning practices,
dispelling myths, and advocating for accessible and quality
services.

j) Sustainable Development: Family planning is a critical

component of sustainable development. By empowering
individuals and couples to make informed reproductive choices, we
contribute to reducing poverty, improving maternal and child
health, and promoting gender equality, all of which are essential
for achieving sustainable development goals.
