Seismic Survey

Seismic surveys are used in oil and gas exploration to map subsurface structures by generating controlled vibrations at the surface and recording reflected waves. Waves are generated, travel through subsurface rock formations, and are detected upon encountering different layers. Recorded data is analyzed to generate subsurface images. Common types include 2D, 3D, and time-lapse surveys. Seismic surveys are important as they cost-effectively map structures, characterize reservoirs, optimize drilling, and reduce risk.

Seismic Survey in oil and

gas exploration
What is Seismic survey

A seismic survey is a method used to map

subsurface structures to identify
potential hydrocarbon reservoirs in the
oil and gas industry.

It involves generating controlled

vibrations at the surface and recording
the reflected waves.
How Seismic Surveys Work

1) Seismic Waves are generated

2) These waves travels through the Earth's

subsurface, encountering different rock
formations.

3) When seismic waves encounter different

subsurface layers, they bounce back or change
direction
How are they mapped

4) Geophones or similar devices are used to

detect and record the reflected and
refracted waves.

5) The recorded data undergoes analysis

and processing to generate images of the
subsurface.
Types of Seismic survey

There are many types coming with the

advancement of the industry.

Generally,
a) 2D Seismic Surveys
b) 3D Seismic Surveys
c) Time-Lapse (4D) Seismic Surveys
Importance of Seismic
Surveys

Seismic Surveys are cost-effective

compared to other surveying technicques.
Some importance includes:

a) Mapping Subsurface Structures

b) Reservoir Characterization
c) Optimizing Drilling
d) Risk Reduction
