It is not easy to put a log over a wide river. Therefore, some clever people started using stones,
cement and steel to make bridges. These kinds of bridges are very strong and can be used for many
years. For example, bridges built over two thousand years ago are still being used.

Many people in Chiadzwa had lived in grass thatched houses for many years. They had to walk long
distances to fetch clean water. The roads were bad and dusty and the people’s nearest bus stops
were far away. Only two buses operated in the area.
While herding cattle, a young boy came across a clear dazzling stone. His father took the stone to
town and it was discovered that the stone was pure diamond. The family started digging for the
gem. The news spread like veld fire and many villagers scrambled for the stone.

Many people from all over the country flocked to Chiadzwa for the diamonds. Local buyers came
with clothing, blankets and food to barter for the gem. Other buyers from neighbouring countries
such as Zambia, Mozambique and South Africa offered cash and paid more for the clear stone
called ‘ngwetu-ngwetu’ than for the grey stone called ‘ngoda’.
These precious stones have transformed the lives of many people who live in Chiadzwa. They now
live in electrified houses and have boreholes in their backyards. The transport problem is now a
thing of the past.
