Hans Kollhoff :
• Hans Kollhoff takes us through the work of his practice,
characterised by its focus on the reconstruction of the European
city.
• Hans Kollhoff founded his practice in 1978 after completing his
studies at Cornell University, where he studied under Colin Rowe
and Oswald Mathias Ungers.
• Key projects include the monumental Piraeus apartment building in
Amsterdam (1994), which left a lasting legacy on housing design in
Europe, and the Daimler Chrysler High-rise Building in Potsdamer
Platz, Berlin, (2000) which demonstrated the continued relevance
of the language of early twentieth century American skyscrapers to
contemporary needs.
• The Architecture Foundation, in association with the Barbican,
presents Architecture on Stage – a programme of talks by the
world's leading architects.
• Hans Kollhoff's architecture is characterised by a classical building-
style and the use of solid, traditional materials, such as stone and
brick, worked according to traditional methods.
• During his career, Kollhoff has developed in the direction of a more
and more traditional form, often using classical motifs.
PROJECTS
Project done by him:

• Kollhoff-Tower at the Berlin
• Dominium in Colonge
• Galerie Roter Turm at the Neumarkt , Chemnitz
• The Statendam in Rotterdam
• The Compagnie in Rotterdam
• Colonel Building in Maastricht
• The JuBi-building in The Hague
Steel framed
• bi-fold windows give the building a 19th century industrial
appearance. The fragile, human scaled slender framing and small
glass panes are a counterpoint to the expanses of brickwork.
• It is currently not possible to use this type of glazing as part of a
facade because it does not comply with insulation requirements.
• The architects have instead employed it as an additional layer of
environmental protection; making a façade that sits comfortably in
its historical dockland setting.
Steel is also used in large paving panels in the internal street and in
the suspended operable steel fire escape.
Detail, colour, variation and texture reserved for the entrance points
of the building where people touch and use it.
