Assignment 6 (Updated)

This document provides instructions for Assignment #6 in the Engineering Thermodynamics course GENG 220. It includes: - A template for students to show their names, IDs, and solve problems. - Notes that submissions must be by groups of 1-3 same-gender students and include a cover page. Late or missing submissions will result in grade deductions. - Four sample thermodynamics problems for students to solve involving air flow through a nozzle, refrigerant mixing, air filling an insulated tank, and textbook/EES problems.

Fall 2023 Semester

Thermo Coordinator (AA) Fall 2023

1) 0.5 kg/s of air enters steadily a nozzle at a pressure of 300 kPa, a temperature of 473 K, and a
velocity of 30 m/s and then leaves the nozzle at a pressure of 100 kPa and a velocity of 180 m/s.
If the heat loss from the nozzle is 5 kW, determine:

a. The inlet area of the nozzle

b. The temperature of the air leaving the nozzle

c. For the same inlet conditions, suggest one modification on the nozzle design that can help
increasing the exit velocity?

2) A Refrigerant 134a at 1 MPa and 12 oC is mixed with another stream at 1 MPa and 60 oC. If
the mass flow rate of the cold stream is twice that of the hot one, determine the temperature of
the exit stream.

3) (Unsteady) A 1 m3 rigid, insulated tank that is initially evacuated is connected through a valve
to a supply line that carries air at 200 kPa and 120 oC. Now the valve is opened, and air is
allowed to flow into the tank until the pressure reaches 200 kPa, at which point the valve is
closed. Determine:

a. The flow work (i.e. Pv work) of the air in the supply line
b. The final temperature of the air in the tank
c. The mass of the air that entered the tank
