Locating Places On The Earth

The document discusses key concepts related to locating places on Earth including reference points, latitude zones, time zones, and meridians. It provides explanations of the North and South Poles serving as reference points. It details the five latitudinal heat zones between the North and South Frigid Zones and their boundaries. It also explains why the Torrid Zone has the maximum temperature and the significance of Greenwich Mean Time in establishing consistent time zones.

Class:VI Locating Places on the Earth

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
D. Answer the following questions in brief:
1) Which two basic points on the earth serve as the reference points?
Ans: The two basic points on the earth that serve as the reference points are the North Pole and
South Pole.

2) Mention the latitudinal location of the heat zones of the earth.

Ans: The Heat Zones
• The North Frigid Zone lies between the North Pole at 90°
N and the Arctic Circle at 66 ½°N.
• The North Temperate Zone lies between the Arctic Circle
at 66 ½°N and the Tropic of Cancer at 23 ½ °N.
• The Torrid Zone, lies between the Tropic of Cancer at 23
½ °N and the Tropic of Capricorn at 23 ½ ° S.
• The South Temperate Zone, between the Tropic of
Capricorn at 23 ½ ° S and the Antarctic Circle at 66 ½ °S.
• The South Frigid Zone, from the Antarctic Circle at 66 ½
°S and the South Pole at 90°S.

3) Why does the torrid zone have the maximum temperature?

• In this zone, the rays of the sun are exactly overhead once a year.
• On the equator the mid-day sun is overhead twice a year. Hence it receives maximum
heat from the sun and is very hot.

4) What is the significance of Greenwich Mean Time?
Ans) Greenwich Mean Time is followed by all countries for the international airlines and ship
fleets.

5) Why is the standard Meridian selected by country a multiple of 7.5 degrees?

Ans: The Meridian selected is divisible by 7° 30’ so that the difference between its Standard
Time and the Greenwich Mean Time is expressed in the multiple of half an hour. The Meridian
selected for a country is called the Standard Meridian.

E. Answer the following questions.

1) State three main characteristics of parallels of latitudes
• Parallels of latitudes are horizontal lines drawn on a globe or a map.
• These lines run parallel to each other.
• The equator is the longest line of latitude.
• The latitudes are always expressed in degrees.
• They are numbered from 0° to 90° North and South.
2) Which heat zone is suitable for us to live and why?
Ans: The temperate zone is the most suitable heat zone for us to live because it has moderate
climate.

3) Why do we use standard time? Explain with example from India?

Ans: Places located at different meridians have different local time. It would create a lot of
difficulties if all countries would adopt different local time.
It would be difficult to prepare railway time-table and the air flight schedules.
To avoid different problems and maintain a uniformity all over the country, it was decided to
adopt the local time of a Central Meridian of a country as the Standard Time of India.
India has selected 82°30’ E longitude as its Standard Meridian. It passes through Mirzapur.

4) Distinguish between Prime Meridian and Equator.

EQUATOR PRIME MERIDIAN
Equator is located at 0° latitude. Prime Meridian passes through 0° longitude.

It is an imaginary horizontal line. It is an imaginary vertical line.

It divides the Earth into Northern and It divides the Earth into Eastern and Western
Southern hemisphere. Hemisphere.

5) Why is the time difference between each Meridian of longitude 4 minutes? Explain.
• The earth rotates from West to east and completes one rotation in 24 hours.
• 360 longitudes face the mid-day sun one after the other in 24 hours.
• 15 longitudes pass before the sun in a period of one hour or 60 minutes.
• It takes 4 minutes for one longitude to cross before the sun.
