Activity 5 - Acids and Bases

This document provides instructions for an experiment to test common household substances as acids or bases. Students will predict and then determine whether substances like vinegar, tap water, lemon juice, and baking soda are acidic or basic by observing the color of litmus paper dipped in each solution. They will then measure the pH level of each substance and record their observations in a table. The goal is for students to classify substances as acids or bases, measure pH levels, and understand the differences between acids and bases. Safety precautions are outlined for using chlorine in the experiment.

Activity 5: ACIDS AND BASES

Name: ________________________________________ Score: ______________________
Section: _______________________________________ Date: _______________________

Substances may also be classified into acids and bases. In the laboratory, we identified which
common household substances are acidic or basic by using blue and red litmus paper. pH paper or
blue and red litmus paper were dipped in each of the solutions. After that, pH paper was used to
determine the specific pH of each substance.
OBJECTIVES:
a. Determine whether the product is an acid or base.
b. Measure substances and solutions according to their pH scale.
c. Compare and contrast acids and bases.
MATERIALS:  Chlorine
 Vinegar  8 Cups (preferably transparent plastic
 Tap water cups)
 Liquid or powdered detergent  pH paper
 Lemon or calamansi  Spoon
 Baking soda  Gloves
 Shampoo  Masking tape
 Antacid  Marker
 Calamansi  Camera for documentation
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS!
You will be using chlorine in this experiment. Please be reminded that exposure to chlorine can
result in nose, throat, and eye irritation.
PROCEDURE:
1. Predict whether each item will be an acid or base. Write your answer in the table provided
below.
2. Prepare 8 cups for each group to be filled with the substances. Label each cup with the item
on it using your marker and masking tape. Have each person oversee the different cups.
3. Fill in all the prepared cups based on the label you put on them.
4. Avoid touching and drinking the materials as some of them may be toxic and irritating to the
skin. Do not touch the substances inside the cups unless you are asked to do so.
5. Student 1 will get the vinegar and pour it into the labeled cup.
6. Student 2 will get tap water.
7. Student 3 will get liquid soap. Dissolve it in a small amount of water if you use detergent
powder.
8. Student 4 will get lemon or calamansi extract.
9. Student 5 will get baking soda. Dissolve it in a small amount of water.
10. Student 6 will get shampoo. Slightly dissolve it in water.
11. Student 7 will get the antacid tablet and dissolve it first in the water.
12. Student 8 will get the chlorine and dilute it in water.
13. Dip an indicator strip halfway into the cup labeled vinegar. Dip an indicator strip halfway into
the cup labeled tap water. Do this also to the other substances.
14. Pull out the strip and compare it to the indicator chart. Observe each of the cups and
determine whether the substance is an acid, base, or neutral.
15. Record the color you see in the cup and the pH number that matches that color.
16. Record the number based on the pH scale below.
17. Write whether the substance is an acid, a base, or a neutral based on the number.
