NB NTN

This document provides an overview and status update of NB-NTN (Narrowband Non-Terrestrial Networks) specifications in 3GPP RAN5. RAN5 work is nearly complete and expected to finish in September 2023. TTCN testing is in progress with the first official tests expected to start in July 2023. The technical overview outlines new bands and SIBs introduced for NB-NTN and key challenges around delay compensation due to satellite positioning. Customer interest in testing the new NB-NTN specifications is high.

ABBREVIATIONS…
► Geostationary Earth orbit: circular orbit at 35,786 km above the Earth's equator and following the direction of the Earth's
rotation. An object in such an orbit has an orbital period equal to the Earth's rotational period and thus appears motionless,
at a fixed position in the sky, to ground observers.
► Geosynchronous Orbit: Earth-centred orbit at approximately 35,786 kilometres in altitude above
Earth’s surface and synchronised with Earth’s rotation. A geostationary orbit is a non-inclined geosynchronous orbit, i.e in
the Earth’s equator plane.
► Non-geosynchronous orbit: Earth-centred orbit with an orbital period that does not match Earth’s rotation on its axis.
This includes Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO).
► Low Earth Orbit: orbit around the Earth with an altitude between 300 km, and 1500 km.
► Medium Earth Orbit: region of space around the Earth above low Earth orbit and below geostationary Earth Orbit.
► Non-Geostationary Satellites: satellites (LEO and MEO) orbiting around the Earth with a period that varies
approximately between 1.5 hour and 10 hours.
► NTN-gateway: an earth station located at the surface of the earth, providing connectivity to the NTN payload using the
feeder link. An NTN Gateway is a TNL node.
► NTN payload: a network node, embarked on board a satellite, providing connectivity functions, between the service link
and the feeder link. In the current version of this specification, the NTN payload is a TNL node.
► Service link: radio link between satellite and UE.
► Feeder link: wireless link between NTN Gateway and (NTN Payload) satellite.

TECHNICAL OVERVIEW
► Bands introduces are 255 and 256
► SIB31 and SIB32 are introduced
► SystemInformationBlockType31-NB is only signalled in a NTN cell
► SIB31 contains satellite information
► UE is required to have a valid GNSS position before it aquires the cell
► Challenge is the delay compensation as this is based on
− Satellite location, UE location
► Doppler shift not considered at the moment (GEO)

INFO AND NEXT STEPS
► CMW-KK307 has been introduced for NB-NTN PCT test cases

► Test execution will be on CMW ( Base 4)

► Contest Support required, TCE ?

► Quite a lot of customer interested to try the test cases

− MTK, QC, Samsung, Altair, CEVA…

► Aim to get the test cases verified based on 23wk24 and release the product.
