Tutorial 01

Rotational Motion

Final submission date for answer scripts: 11/05/2020

01. What are the corresponding angular quantities for the following linear quantities?
i. Displacement
ii. Velocity
iii. Acceleration
iv. Force
v. Momentum

02. What would be the corresponding equations in rotational motion for the following equations in
linear motion?
i. v = u + at
ii. s = ut + at2
iii. v2 = u2 + 2as
iv. f = ma

03. On a rotating merry-go-round, one child sits on a horse near the outer edge and another child sits
on a lion halfway out from the center. (a) Which child has the greater linear velocity? (b) Which
child has the greater angular velocity?
Explain your answer with a neat sketch.

04. Following statements were made by a student. Explain what you think of the statements. Are they
correct or wrong?
i. Even if the angular velocity is constant, each point on the object is subjected to a certain type
of acceleration.
ii. The quantities angular velocity and angular accelerations are vectors.
iii. A longer lever arm is helpful in rotating an object.

05. You and a friend play on a seesaw. Your mass is 90 kg and your friend’s mass is 60 kg. The
seesaw board is 3.0 m long and has a negligible mass. Find where the pivot should be placed so
that the seesaw will balance when you sit on the left end and your friend sits on the right end?

06. A flywheel of radius 30 cm starts from rest and accelerates with a constant acceleration of
0.5rads-2. Compute the tangential, radial and resultant accelerations of a point on its
circumference in following instances.
i. Initially at = 0°
ii. After it has made one third of a revolution.
07. A carousel is initially at rest. At t = 0 it is given a constant angular acceleration α = 0.060 rads-2,
which increases its angular velocity for 8.0 s. At t = 8.0 s, determine the magnitude of the
following quantities:
i. the angular velocity of the carousel
ii. the linear velocity of a child located 2.5 m from the center
iii. the tangential (linear) acceleration of that child
iv. the centripetal acceleration of the child
v. the total linear acceleration of the child

08. A truck has a linear acceleration of 1.85ms-2 and the wheels have an angular acceleration of
5.23rads-2. Consider the truck is towing a trailer with wheels that have a diameter of 46cm.
i. What is the diameter of the truck’s wheels?
ii. How does linear acceleration of trailer compare with that of the truck?
iii. How does angular acceleration of trailer wheels compare with the truck wheels?

09. A centrifuge rotor is accelerated from rest to 20,000 rpm in 30 s.

i. What is its average angular acceleration?
ii. Through how many revolutions has the centrifuge rotor turned during its acceleration period?
Assume angular acceleration was constant

10. A disk of radius R = 3.0 m rotates at an angular velocity ω = (1.6 + 1.2t) rad/s, where t is in
seconds. At the instant t = 2.0 s, determine
i. the angular acceleration,
ii. the speed ‘v’ and the components of the acceleration ‘a’ of a point on the edge of the disk
