Unit 1 Fluid Static’s: Review of Basic concepts &properties of the fluid. Pressure at a point, pressure
variation in static fluid, Absolute and gauge pressure, manometers, Forces on plane and curved surfaces;
buoyant force, Stability of floating and submerged bodies, Relative equilibrium.
Unit 2 Kinematics of Flow : Types of flow-ideal & real , steady & unsteady, uniform & non-uniform,
one, two and three dimensional flow, path lines, streak-lines, streamlines and stream tubes; continuity
equation for one and three dimensional flow, rotational & irrotational flow, circulation, stagnation point,
separation of flow, sources & sinks, velocity potential, stream function, flow net & its applications ,
method of drawing flow nets.
Unit 3 Dynamics of Flow: Euler’s equation of motion along a streamline and derivation of Bernoulli’s
equation, application of Bernoulli’s equation, energy correction factor, linear momentum equation for
steady flow; momentum correction factor. The moment of momentum equation, forces on fixed and
moving vanes and other applications. Fluid Measurements: Velocity measurement ( Pitot tube, current
meters etc.); flow measurement (orifices, nozzles, mouth pieces, orifice meter, nozzle meter, venturi-
meter, weirs and notches).
Introduction to boundary layer, Boundary layer development on a flat plate and its characteristics -
Boundary layer thickness, displacement thickness, momentum thickness, energy thickness. Momentum
equation for boundary layer by Von karman, drag on flat plate, boundary layer separation and its control.
Aerofoil theory, lift and drag coefficients, streamlined and bluff bodies.
Unit 5 Flow through Pipes : Reynolds experiment & Reynolds number, laminar & turbulent flow,
Introduction to Navier Stokes’ Equation, relation between shear & pressure gradient, laminar flow
through circular pipes, friction factor, laminar flow between parallel plates, hydrodynamic lubrication.

Course Outcomes :
On completion of this course students will be able to
1. Develop a sound understanding of calculus of vectors and their geometrical as well as physical
applications
2. Develop the knowledge of finding approximate solutions of algebraic as well as simultaneous
linear equations.
3. Do interpolation and quadrature based interpolation.
4. Find expansion of functions in a series of sine and cosine and their application in various
disciplines.
5. Use Laplace transform methods to solve variety of differential equations appearing in applied
sciences as Partial differential equations are very useful to solve various boundary value
problems
Unit 1 Vector Calculus: Differentiation of vectors, scalar and vector point function, Gradient,
Geometrical meaning of gradient, Directional derivative, Divergence and curl, Physical
interpretation of divergence and curl. Line integral, Surface integral and Volume integral,
Stoke’s theorem (Green’s, theorem as a special case) and Gauss divergence theorem.
Unit 2 Solution of Algebraic and Transcendental Equations: Bisection method. Iteration methods
based on first degree equation: Secant method, Method of false position, Newton-Raphson
method. System of Simultaneous linear equations: Gauss elimination method, Gauss Jordan’s
Method, Crout’s Method, Jacobi’s method and Gauss-Seidal method.
Unit 3 Interpolation: Difference Operators, Interpolation formulae for equally and unequally
spaced intervals. Numerical Integration: Trapezoidal, Simpsons 1/3, Simpsons 3/8 and Weddle’s
formulae.
Unit 4 Fourier Series: Euler’s formula, Fourier series for discontinuous functions, Expansion of
odd and even periodic functions, Half range series. Introduction to Fourier Transform
Unit 5 Laplace Transform: Introduction of Laplace transform, Laplace transform of elementary
functions, Properties of Laplace transform, Change of scale property, First and second shifting
properties, Laplace transform of derivative and integral. Inverse Laplace transform & its
properties, Convolution theorem, Applications of Laplace transforms to solve the ordinary
differential equations.

representation of machine parts such as external and internal threads, slotted heads, square ends, and flat
radial ribs, slotted shaft, splined shafts, bearings, springs, gears, Rivet heads and Riveted joints, Welded
joints, Drawing of Threaded fasteners .
Assembly Drawing : Assembly Machine Drawing ,Basic concept of assembly drawing ,bill of materials,
Assembly drawing of Cotter and Knuckle joints, pedestal and footstep bearings, Engine parts- crosshead
and stuffing box, IC engines parts - piston and connecting rods; lathe machine parts-Tool post and Tail
Stock.
CAD : software and hardware required to produce CAD drawings Software: operating systems; CAD
software packages e g AutoCAD, AutoCAD/Inventor, Micro station, Catia, Pro/ENGINEER, Solid
works; minimum system requirements. Preparing & interpreting CAD drawing, orthographic
projections; Commands: absolute/relative/polar coordinates; features eg line types, grids, snaps, circle,
text, hatching, dimensioning, layers/levels, colour; viewing e g zoom, pan; inserting other drawings e g
symbols, blocks; modifying e g copy, rotate, move, erase, scale, chamfer, fillet Interpret: determine
properties of drawn objects e g list, distance, area, volume use CAD software to produce 2D & 3D
