Session 3-Unit 5-Linear Function
Point slope
𝒚 − 𝒚𝟏 = 𝒎(𝒙 − 𝒙𝟏 )
Example: Write the point-slope form of an equation for a line that passes through each point with
the given slope:
• ( 3 , 8 ), m = 2
7
• ( - 4, 8 ), m = 2
• 𝑦 − 2 = 3(𝑥 − 1)
3 1
• 𝑦 + 5 = −4(𝑥 − 2)
Two nonvertical lines are parallel if they have the same slope. All vertical lines are parallel
𝑚1 = 𝑚2
Example: write the slope-intercept form of an equation for the line that passes through (-1, -2) and is
parallel to the graph of 𝑦2 = −3𝑥 − 2.
Two lines are perpendicular if the product of their slopes is -1. That is, the slope are opposite
reciprocals of each other. Vertical lines and horizontal lines are also perpendicular.
Example: write the slope intercept form for an equation of a line that passes through ( -3, -2 )
and is perpendicular to the graph 𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 12.
1. Write the slope-intercept form of an equation of the line that passes through the given point
and is parallel to the graph of each equation
• ( 2, −7 ), 𝑦 = 𝑥 − 2
• ( 2, 2), 3𝑥 − 4𝑦 = −4
1
• ( −1, 2 ), 𝑦 = − 𝑥 − 4
2
2. Write an equation of the line that has y-intercept -6 and is parallel to the graph of 𝑥 − 3𝑦 = 8
3. Write the slope-intercept form of an equation that passes through the given point and is
perpendicular to the graph of each equation.
• ( −2, 0 ), 𝑦 = 𝑥 − 6
• ( 0, 4 ), 3𝑥 + 8𝑦 = 4
2
• ( 4, 7), 𝑦 = 𝑥 − 1
3
4. Write an equation of the line that is perpendicular to the line through ( 9, 10) and ( 3, -2 ) and
passes through the x-intercept of that line.
5. Write the slope intercept form of an equation of the line that passes through the given point
and is parallel to the graph of each equation.
