e between the rich and the poor, who struggle to feed their families Wang Lungs daughter is learning to walk and is always begging to be with her mother O-lan gets pregnant again Wang Lung wants to go back to his land, so O-lan suggests they sell their daughter Wang Lung discovers the rich have hordes of wealth and that even servants have chopsticks with silver lining Wang Lungs neighbor tells him that there are ways to level the rich and the poor, implying a revolution is about to happen Chapter 14: Spring arrives and O-lan and the boys start to scavenge for food that they can steal Wang Lung cries out to a group of men that if he had all of the gold and silver and rubies that he would buy land and bring forth harvest from it, and it laughed at Wang Lung is handed a picture of Jesus being crucified and of a Chinese man being stabbed, but cannot understand as he is illiterate Soldiers seize Wang Lungs neighbor and the men he was talking with earlier to carry ammo and bedding for them when they go into war The markets begin to close and jobs are scarce The enemy broke through the gates and the poor people invade the houses of the rich Wang Lung doesnt want to steal so he wanders off only to find a fat man who begs for his life Wang Lung takes gold from the fat man before running away Chapter 15: Wang Lung is heading back home and he has bought good seed from the south along with grain, corn, rice, and a variety of vegetables and an ox. Ching tells Wang Lung that a band of robbers had been living in his house during the winter season and thats why his house was burned and trashed. Ching is famished and Wang Lang promises to grow his crops to repay him for his kindness earlier Wang also learns that his uncle left the village and no one is for certain his whereabouts. They fix up the house and O-lan is pregnant again.
And the thought of it lying there waiting for him, rich with the spring rains, filled him with desire. Now, I would not sell a child! Sir, is there any way whereby the rich who oppress us can make it rain so that I can work on the land? If only we were back on our land Give me more! But gold was suddenly nothing to Wang Lung when he looked at this ox, and he passed it over to the farmers hand and he watched while the farmer unyoked the beast... O-lan: There is nothing to sell except the girl O-lan took it and sewed it into a shoe sole together with other bits of paper she picked up here and there to make the soles firm Uncle: Your uncle, it is said, knows more of them than an honest man should.
