Unit 5 Mat Foundation Sample Problem

1. The document describes the process for designing a mat foundation, including calculating soil pressures, dividing the mat into beams, and determining steel requirements. 2. It then provides an example, calculating loads, pressures at different points, and steel requirements in the long and short directions of the mat. 3. The mat is designed as 13.8m x 23.7m x 0.6m thick, with steel reinforcement as determined in the example. The actual soil pressure is calculated to be less than the allowable pressure, so the design is sufficient.

MAT FOUNDATION

A conventional design of mat foundation consists of establishing the mat

dimensions from which the soil pressures at various locations beneath the base
may be computed. With the pressure distribution known, the mat is subdivided
into a series of continuous beams (strips) centered on the appropriate column
rows. With the mat row in a series of beams, shear and moment diagrams maybe
established using either combined footing analysis or beam moment coefficients.
The depth will usually be constant but the steel requirements may vary from strip
to strip.
Example:
The mat foundation shown has the following load distribution per column. All
columns are 38c cm x 38 cm with fc ’ = 211 kg/cm2 fs = 1406 kg/cm2, allowable
soil pressure = 7330 kg/cm2, v = 7.73 kg/cm2 k = 0.378 j = 0.874.
Determine the following:
1. The soil pressure at all points.
2. The steel requirements in the long direction using 22 mm ∅ bars
3. The steel requirements along the short direction using 22 mm ∅ bars.

1. Pressure at all points

Total load = (38.6) 2 + (150) 4 + (50) 2 + 41 + 44 + (114) 2

Total load = 1090.2 tons

Location of the total load R with respect to AB

1090.2 x = (50+50+150+150) 6 + (44+41+114+114) 12

x = 5.65 m (right of AB)

Location of the total load R with respect to AD

∑MAD
1090.2 y = (38.6+50+44) 21.9 + (150+150+114) 14.6 + (150+150+114) 7.3
y = 10.98 m (above AD)

Eccentricities:

eX = 6 – 5. 65
eX = 0.35 m

eY = 10.98 – 10.95
eY = 0.03 m

Moment of Inertia:

IX= 13.8 ¿ ¿
IX = 15309 m4

IY = 23.70 ¿ ¿
IY = 5190 m4

Mx = P ex = 1090.2 (0.03)
Mx = 32.706 Ton-m

My = 1090.20 (0.35)
My = 381.57 Ton-m

fA =

fA = 3.33 – 0.023 + 0.441
fA = 3.748 tons/m2
at Point B:
1090.2 (32.706)(10.95) 381.57(6)
fB =
(23.7)(13.8)
+ 15309
+ 5190
fB = 3.33 + 0.023 + 0.441
fB = 3.794 tons/m2

fC = 3.33 + 0.023 – 0.441
fC = 2.912 tons/m2

fD =

fD = 3.33 – 0.023 + 0.441
fD =2.866 tons/m2

1090.2 ( 32.706 ) ( 10.95 ) 381.57 ( 0 )

fE =
( 23.7 ) ( 13.8 )

fE = 3.33 – 0.023 - 0
fE =3.307 tons/m2

at Point F:

fF =
(23.7)(13.8)

fF = 3.33 + 0.23 + 0
fF = 3.353 tons/m2

2. Steel requirements in the long direction:

In the long direction, the mat will be divided into 3 equal beams

STRIP AB:

M = 3771 ¿ ¿
M = 20,095.66 kg-m/m width

STRIP EF:

M = 3330 ¿ ¿
M = 17,745.57 kg-m/m width

STRIP CD:

M = 2889 ¿ ¿
M = 15,395.48 kg-m/m width

The maximum shear will occur as punching shear at one of the 150t
exterior columns, since it is obvious that punching shear and not
wide beam shear controls.

Perimeter in shear:

Bo = 2(90 +38 + d/2) + [38 + 2(d/2)]

Bo = 2(128 + d/2) + (38 + d)
Bo = 256 + d + 38 + d
Bo = 294 + 2d

Allowable shearing stress = 7.73 kg/cm2

V 150(1000)
v= 7.73 =
Bo d ( 294+2 d ) d
(2d2 + 294d) 7.73 = 150000
d2 + 147d – 9702.46
by quadratic equation:
d = 49.4 cm say 49.5cm
total depth = 49.5 + 7.5
total depth = 57 cm; use 60 cm
d = 60 – 7.5 = 52.5 cm

Steel areas:

STRIP AB
20,095.66 (100)
As = = 31. 15 cm2
1406(0.874 )(52.5)

STRIP EF:
17,745.57 (100)
As = = 27.51 cm2
1406(0.874 )(52.5)

STRIP CD:
15,395.48 (100)
As = = 23.86 cm2
1406(0.874 )(52.5)

For 22 mm∅ bars:

2 2
πd π (2.2)
A22 = = = 3.80 cm2
4 4
Spacing of bars:
3.80(100)
S= S = 12.2 cm
31.15
Use 22 mm∅ bars @ 12.0 cm on center

Run 50% of the steel continuous both bottom and top length of mat, unless it is
deemed more economical for placing to run all bars continuous.
3. Allong short direction:
Average soil pressure is 3.771 tons/m2 (3771 kg/m2) for all equivalent
beams. Since this is a two-span beam, use 1/8 as moment coefficient.
M = 3771 ¿ ¿
M = 16969.5 kg-m/m of width
16969.5 (100)
As =
1406(0.874 )(52.5)
As = 26.30 cm2
Spacing of 22 mm bars:
3.80(100)
S=
26.30
S = 14.45 cm say 14 cm

Therefore; use 13.80m x 23.70 m x 0.60 m mat foundation

Weight of foundation = 2.4 (13.8) (23.70) (0.60)

Weight of foundation = 470.97 tons

Total load = 1090.2 + 470.97

Total load = 1561.17 tons

1561.17(1000)
Actual soil pressure =
(13.80)¿ ¿
Actual soil pressure = 4773.34 kg/m2 < 7330 kg/m2 (safe)

Therefore; use 13.80m x 23.70m x 0.60m matt foundation
