Passage 2
Remember that immigration and customs officials are very document-minded. You should
always carry your passport in a safe place on your person or, if not going far, leave it in the hotel
safe. If staying in a country for several weeks, it is worthwhile to register at your embassy or
consulate. Then, if your passport is stolen, the process of replacing it is simpler and faster. Keeping
photocopies of essential documents and some additional passport-sized photographs are
recommended also.
Remember that it is your responsibility to ensure that your passport is stamped in and out when
you cross frontiers. The absence of entry and exit stamps can cause serious difficulties (seek out the
proper officials if the stamping process is not carried out as you cross). Also, do not lose your entry
card; replacing it causes a lot of headaches and expense. Citizens of countries that require visas
(e.g., France, Korea) can expect more delays and problems at border crossings.

Passage 2
In most parts of the United States, Friday night is the big supermarket night, probably because
Friday is a pay day in many factories and businesses. Most housewives also do their weekend
shopping on either Friday or Saturday, although supermarkets in many sections are now open on
Saturday as well.
In almost all supermarkets there are shopping carts with a special space to set the baby. In the
early days, before there were carts it was noticed that as soon as a woman shopper had her arms
full of goods she stopped buying. Thus, carts were introduced. Later a space for the baby was
provided in the cart because it was observed with the baby sitting comfortably in the cart the
mother felt less need to hurry through the store and consequently bought more.
Statistics show that the average American housewife goes to the supermarket twice a week. On
the average she spends from one hour to two hours there each week. Psychologists say that women
don’t go to the supermarket just to buy the food. Visiting the supermarket is the housewife’s
chance to get away from home for a while.
