Unlock 2

The document is a lecture on representing functions and their properties. It contains 3 main points: 1) It discusses 4 ways to represent a function: verbally, numerically, visually through graphs, and algebraically. It provides examples of each. 2) It covers concepts like domain, range, and how to read the values of a function from its graph. It includes examples of interpreting graphs of functions. 3) It explains properties of functions like increasing/decreasing behavior, even/odd properties, and operations like addition and multiplication that preserve these properties. Homework problems and exercises are assigned.

The graph of a function 𝑓 gives us a useful picture of the behavior or “life
history” of a function. Since the 𝑦 − 𝑐𝑜𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒 of any point (𝑥, 𝑦) on the
graph is 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥), we can read the value of 𝑓(𝑥) from the graph as being the
height of the graph above the point 𝑥 (see Figure 4). The graph of 𝑓 also allows
us to picture the domain of 𝑓 on the 𝑥 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠 and its range on the 𝑦 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠 as
in Figure 5.

Properties of Absolute Values

Suppose 𝑎 > 0 is any real number .Then

1 𝑥 = −𝑥 4 𝑥 = 𝑎 ⟺ 𝑥 = ±𝑎

2 𝑥 ≤ 𝑎 ⟺ −𝑎 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 𝑎 . { 𝑥 ∈ −𝑎, 𝑎 }

3 𝑥 ≥ 𝑎 ⟺ 𝑥 ≥ 𝑎 𝑜𝑟 𝑥 ≤ −𝑎 . { 𝑥 ∈ −∞, −𝑎 ∪ 𝑎, ∞ }

𝑎2 = 𝑎 if 𝑎 ≥ 0. (−𝑎)2 = −𝑎 if 𝑎 < 0.
It is true only when 𝑎 ≥ 0.
𝑎2 = 𝑎

Even function Odd function

if 𝑓 −𝑥 = 𝑓(𝑥) ∀ 𝑥 ∈ 𝐷, then If 𝑓 −𝑥 = −𝑓 𝑥 ∀ 𝑥 ∈ 𝐷,
𝑓 is called an even function. then 𝑓 is called an odd function.
The graph is symmetric with The graph is symmetric with
respect to the _ _ _ _ _ _ . respect to the _ _ _ _ _ _ .

𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 2 is even 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 3 is odd

Note

Adding:
The sum of two even functions is even
The sum of two odd functions is odd
The sum of an even and odd function is neither even nor odd (unless one
function is zero).

Multiplying:
The product of two even functions is an even function.
The product of two odd functions is an even function.
The product of an even function and an odd function is an odd function.
