Social Ltd. The Philippines’ internet and social media users grew by over 25 percent, up
13 million and 12 million over last year respectively. Mobile was also a fast-growing
platform, accounting for 38 percent of all Web traffic in the country.

Activity 1: Writing a Data Commentary

Using the description below, Make a Table, showing the information described in the
written text below about Social Media Usage.

1. Filipinos are going online spending roughly four hours and 17 minutes a day,
according to a report. Brazilians and Argentinians followed closely behind,
spending three hours and 43 minutes and three hours and 32 minutes on social
media, respectively, the report said. Meanwhile, Americans are in the bottom half,
spending an average of just two hours and six seconds per day. The least active
were the Japanese, who log on an average of just 40 minutes daily. Citizens from
Korea, on the other hand, just spend 1 hour and 11 minutes a day on social media.
Social media users are shown in this table.

Think ahead!

1. When you do write a data commentary, what should be the content?

2. Presentation, Analysis, and interpretation are the usual format or flow of the
description. The description above is just presentation. Do you agree?
3. What should be in the analysis part of the data commentary? What about
interpretation?

Read and Ponder

Internet Use on the Rise

The Philippines, so far, has a social media penetration rate of 58 percent, higher
than the average of 47 percent in Southeast Asia. Around the world internet users grew
10 percent, or an additional 354 million people, while active social media users jumped 21
percent, or an additional 482 million.

Digital Connectivity
Half of the world’s population is now online, which is a testament to the speed with
which digital connectivity is helping to improve people’s lives, according to We Are Social
consultant, Simon Kemp. The report compiles the data from the world’s largest studies of

online behavior, conducted by organizations including GlobalWebIndex, GSMA

Intelligence, Statista, and Akamai in “a comprehensive state” of social media reference.
Often times, as users of Social Media, you will be confronted with information that
are “non-prose materials.” Non-prose materials online appear in visuals like graphs,
charts, tables, figures, symbols and others that need to be understood. In the academe,
there is a need for you to read and understand visuals since these are common in
academic writing and researches. Describing trends, cash flows, and many types of data
that are non-literary demands your mature understanding and interpretation.
Knowing how to read and interpret visuals, so as knowing how write data
commentaries will give you an edge over other learners who had less exposure to these
types of writing.

See if you can do this!

Write a data commentary on the given information.

Example:

Table 1 shows the _______________, in thousands, from 1950-2050, a range of a

century from the past to its projected future.

As can be seen from the data, in 1950, the number of people inhabiting the globe
was just about ___________, a quite lesser number of people as opposed to a century
after. Obviously, a decade after (1960), it rose to 3,031,931, an increase of over half its
number. Presently, in the year 2020, as projected, the number of people will have
increased much, reaching past seven million bracket. By the year, 2050, the earth will be
much thickly populated with its projected increase reaching up to past 9 million people
which is by far the highest projected growth.

The data imply that as years go by, people living on planet earth will have grown
exponentially. This population increase can be attributed to __________________. This
population increase will have serious repercussions on our _____________.
