9. Denote X as the number of customers enters the bowling centre in each hour. It is know
that X follows the Poisson distribution and the standard deviation of X is 2 . Suppose the
number of people who enters in each hour is independent.
(a) Find the probability such that exactly 12 people enter the bowling centre in three
consecutive hours. (2 marks)
(b) Find the probability such that there at least 3 people enter the bowling centre in
three consecutive hours. (2 marks)
(c) Suppose the bowling centre opens at 8:00 am. Excluding the admin named Hanky,
the bowling centre is completely empty. Denote Y as the number of customers
leaves the bowling centre in each hour. Hanky found that Y also follows the Poisson
distribution. Suppose Hanky will not leave the bowling centre in the entire period of
time. Given that the probability such that there are 5 people in the bowling centre
32
before 9:00 am is 7
. The bowling centre will close at 11:00 am.

(ii) Given that there are only 3 customers entered the bowling centre and all of
them entered before 9:00 am and there are 2 people only right after 10:00
am . (3 marks)
(iii) Given there are only 3 customers entered the bowling centre and all of them
entered at the same time. Suppose no one entered during the middle hour
period. Find the probability such that there are 2 people staying in the centre
during the entire period of last hour. Express your answer in 3 significant
figures. (3 marks)

10. The volume of a bottle of energy drink Mountain Dew follows a normal distribution. In the
bottle, the label shows that the volume of each bottle should be exactly the mean volume. It
is known that there are 15.87% of the bottle which the volume is more than 338 mL and
there are 10.56% of the bottle which the volume is below 320 mL .
(a) Find the mean and standard deviation of the volume of the bottle. (3 marks)
(b) Paul claims that he get some of the bottle with the volume 330 mL . Is it true?
Explain your answer. (2 marks)
(c) Find the maximum volume, such that more than 30% of the bottle below it.
(2 marks)
(d) Now all the bottles are poured in a box and they are inspected one by one, the
volume below the value that found on (c) is classified as unacceptable .
(i) Find the probability such that the second unacceptable bottle is found in
tenth inspection. (2 marks)
(ii) If the probability of first unacceptable bottle is found after the tenth
inspection exceed 0.02 . Find the least extra number of bottle need to be
inspected. (4 marks)
