Fort Santiago is one of the oldest fortifications in Manila built
by the Spaniards in 1571 from what was once a palisaded structure of
logs and earth built by Rajah Soliman on the native settlement
called Maynila. The fort was destroyed in 1574 during the Chinese attack
led by Limahong. The stone fort was built between 1589 and 1592 and
was repaired and extended after being damaged by the 1645 earthquake.
Spanish, British, American and Japanese occupation forces used the fort
as their headquarters and a prison for men, women, children and soldiers.

In 1945 following the

liberation of Manila
during the Second
World War, the US Army
discovered 600
decomposing
corpses inside the Fort
Santiago dungeons. The
conditions were so
cramped that all
prisoners died from
suffocation and heat
exhaustion.
Basco Lighthouse was built in Naidi Hills, at the site of the old
telegraph facility used during the American era and was destroyed by the
Japanese during World War II. The main column is round, white painted, and
crowned with a red lantern room. The bottom portion and the attached dwelling
are limestone masonry. The 20-meter tower has six stories, with the fifth being
the gallery, allowing unobstructed views of the West Philippine Sea to the west,
Mt. Iraya to the north, and the Basco Town Proper to the south. A.

in the Philippines. Constructed during the administration of President
