Hydroponics Using Kratky Method

This document provides instructions for hydroponic lettuce growth using the Kratky Method. It outlines the preparation, germination, incubation, introduction to sunlight/water, half-strength and full-strength nutrient solution stages. The preparation involves preparing growing media and containers. Seeds are directly sown and covered during germination. Seedlings are slowly introduced to sunlight after sprouting. Nutrient solutions of increasing strength are used as the plants mature over 40-48 days until harvest. Proper pH and nutrient levels are tested throughout using meters.

Hydroponics using Kratky Method

Preparation Stage
1. Spread out the cocopeat in the sun for at least a day (full sun)
2. Make a two-holes in the body of 1.5liter bottle
3. Make holes in the base of plastic cups
4. Prepare a pail, dipper and measuring equipment

Germination Stage
1. Find a shady and stable place to put up the hydroponics
2. Fill the holes of seedling tray with cocopeat
3. Use stick to create a shallow hole
4. Put the seed into the hole and make sure its not covered with soil
5. In watering the seed, it is recommended to fill a basin then put the whole seedling tray
and make sure that the water is sufficient to reach the seed on the top
Incubation Stage
1. Find old clothes/sack
2. Cover the whole seedling stray for at least 1-2 days
3. Put it in a secured place (where rain cannot penetrate)
4. Water in daily

Introduction to the Sun and Water

1. After 2 days, the seed should have a sprout already and remove completely the cover
2. Slowly introduce the seed to the sun
*For the first day, expose it for half day then the following day expose it totally to the sun
but if it’s too hot, make a shade by using a branch of coconut leaves
3. If possible, let the seedling tray stay on the water to prepare/to get the lettuce to be used to
living in water.

Half and Full-Strength Solution

1. In making the half strength solution, add 20ml Solution A into 20 liters of water (use tap
water/ poso and don’t use water from nawasa/chlorinated water) then stir well using a
clean laddle. Add 20ml Solution B in the same water.
2. While in making the full-strength solution, add 40 ml Solution A into 20 liters of water
then stir well using a clean laddle. Add 40 ml Solution B in the same water.
3. Before putting it into the pet bottles, test first its pH level using the pH meter. It should
between 5.5- 6.5 only. While to measurement of how much salt and minerals are in a
solution use the Digital TDS Meter Tester, the PPM of the solution should be in between
560-840 and its EC should be in between 0.8-1.2.
Note: If the pH is too high for the given range, use vinegar or phosphoric acid. While EC
and PPM, just add water to fit within the given range.

Transplanting Stage
1. After 1 week after germination, the lettuce is already ready to the next stage so using a
stick, slowly uproot it in the seedling tray then put it in the plastic cup then add an
enough amount of cocopeat.
2. Put an ample amount of the mixed half strength solution into the pet bottles (the solution
should reach the plastic cup)
3. 15 days after germination, the lettuce is ready to undergo full-strength solution.
4. After 40-48 days, the lettuce is ready to be harvested.
*Add solution into the pet bottle if the water is slowly decreasing.
