The document summarizes the Necromorphs, reanimated corpses reshaped by an alien infection into aggressive forms. Key details:
- Necromorphs violently attack any uninfected organisms to spread the infection through death and reanimation of corpses.
- Upon death, a host's body rapidly mutates as bones break and reshape, organs reshape to increase strength while losing vulnerabilities.
- They are extremely resilient, surviving vacuum and needing full dismemberment to be killed due to lacking vital systems like blood.
- While seen as mindless, they display tactics like ambushing in packs and using sounds to communicate, showing some intelligence.
- The Brute is a strong, arm

Necromorphs
"More of what?! What the hell are
those things? Is that the crew?'" Kendra Daniels The Necromorphs are the reanimated corpses oI the dead, reshaped into horriIic new Iorms by a recombinant extraterrestrial inIection. These creatures are extremely aggressive, and will attack any uninIected organism on sight. The sole purpose oI almost all the Necromorphs is to create more bodies to inIect and spread the inIection. They are believed by some to be the heralds oI humanity's ascension, but on a more practical level are the extremely dangerous result oI exposure to, and tampering oI, presumably alien technology. Biology Infection, Recombination, and Reanimation To Iully consume a host body, the host must Iirst be killed. For reasons unknown, when a living victim is inIected by the recombinant pathogen through exposure transIormation does not take place, and the symptoms oI inIection this way do not necessarily ensure a Iast, eIIicient death. Though it must be noted that the symptoms oI paralysis, catatonia, and impaired breathing would make such a victim easily dispatched by other recombinant Iorms. Once the host is dead, the recombinant properties oI the inIection take hold. It is extremely Iast, and predictably violent. Cellular Iunctions go into a selI destructive overdrive, new biologically active compounds are generated and then metabolized by reanimated Ilesh to Iuel Iurther mutation oI once dead Ilesh. Bones are broken, put together in new Iorms, or turned into entirely new Iorms. All oI this takes place in a handIul oI seconds, and generates tremendous amounts oI heat. More oIten than not, the twisting corpse becomes so hot that stagnant blood boils in the veins and arteries, rupturing skin. Vital and digestive organs that are no longer needed are turned into additional musculature, giving all Necromorphs increased strength. Seemingly not needing such a complex, vulnerable support system, the re-purposing oI these organs also allows the recombinant organism an almost unnatural resistance to injury. The actual type oI Necromorph created largely depends on the location and circumstance, Ior example Lurkers are created Irom any inIant human. However, some Necromorphs are clearly composed oI more than one human (see Brute, Tripod or Graverobber), which is an indication that some Iorm oI intelligence is at work allocating biomass Ior speciIic use. This is especially troubling, as it shows a degree oI planning and Iorethought not Iound in simple creatures.
Several common varIetIes of Necromorph. All Necromorphs are extremely hardy and capable oI surviving in lethal environments such as the vacuum oI space. This evidences a total lack oI respiration or reliance upon vascular activity, as anything approaching liquid blood in space will boil away within seconds. It is this lack oI a vascular support system, more than anything else, that is the primary reason Ior their hardiness. As experience shows, shooting them in the torso where a normal organism can be counted to go down due to internal bleeding and vascular shock is ineIIective. While shots to center mass are still disruptive and will kill them eventually, it is extremely wasteIul and potentially lethal; a person may waste a large amount oI ammunition, or may be attacked by other Necromorphs while they are concentrated on one. The Necromorph inIection is not only limited to humans, ead Space. Martyr describes a Necromorph Iish which behaves like all other Necromorphs, as it attacks another Iish in order to kill and inIect it. This also strongly suggests that Necromorphs can adapt to Iunction under water. Not all dead Ilesh appears to be used Ior mobile Necromorph Iorms, a massive, mat-like growth known as The Corruption is also present. Behavior and Ecology "%heyre not monsters, theyre animals. eadly animals." Catherine Howel Necromorphs are extraordinarily aggressive; they attack any non-Necromorph being on sight, regardless oI species or age. The sole purpose oI this behavior is to spread the inIection quickly. Despite being viewed as mindless killing machines, the creatures sometimes display tactical planning and cooperative behavior. They commonly hunt in small packs (see Pack) oI mixed individuals with semi-speciIic roles, and use stealth, ambush, or pack tactics to gain the upper hand on their victims. This requires a degree oI strategic thinking, and points to a certain amount oI individual intelligence and communication. Examples oI this include using ventilation shaIts to sneak up on prey, playing dead, not attacking until the victim is well within striking range or their back is turned, or using a lure to draw known threats into an ambush. Creatures not currently engaging a non-Necromorph target have been observed as perIorming several diIIerent behaviors. Many will wander aimlessly, almost passively, with no real destination, until they are aware oI a new victim to kill that they will immediately engage. Some will drag bodies to a diIIerent location, possibly to make it easier Ior an InIector to Iind. Some will hide themselves inside ventilation shaIts, setting up new or resetting previous ambush sites. Some will simply stand in place, waiting Ior a new victim to come to them. When a target is present but out oI range, they will oIten watch the victim and attempt to intimidate them with loud growls and threatening poses. Beyond pack tactics the creatures have never really been observed to directly interact with one another (other than the Stalkers, see below). They do not audibly talk to one another, they do not touch each other in a social sense (though one might get in the way oI another during an attack), and they have not been recorded exchanging more subtle chemical signals between each other, IE: pheromones are never mentioned. The scope oI their behaviors is expanded upon in ead Space 2 with the introduction oI Stalkers. Outside oI the Hive Mind, Stalkers seem to have the strongest sense oI pack cohesion and individual intelligence shown Irom Necromorphs, as they will oIten peek around corners to lure Isaac while another will charge Irom a diIIerent direction. They are also the only known Necromorphs to directly communicate with one another. The noises they make seem to hold some signiIicance, e.g. the Stalkers will make a noise while or just aIter Isaac has moved his location, alerting the other Stalkers. Dismemberment "%ake their legs out, and theyll drag themselves toward you. Shoot off an arm, and theyll use their other arm to rip into you. Nope, the only real way to take these creatures out is to completely rip them apart." Glen SchoIield, Dead Space Executive Producer As said in the previous section, Necromorphs do not suIIer Irom the vulnerabilities associated with a body that needs interconnected vital organs, centralized nervous system, respiration, or vascular support. Injuries that would kill an ordinary human, such as a shot to the cranial cavity containing the brain, have little eIIect on them. Countless have died due to not knowing the Necromorphs' only vulnerability: dismemberment. The only eIIective way to kill the creatures is to literally chop them to pieces by removing the head, arms, legs, and other appendages until the creature is killed. Standard Iorm Brute "our weapons cant punch through that things armor' Shoot it in the back, Isaac'" Zach Hammond The Brute is one oI the strongest Necromorph Iorms encountered in the Dead Space series. It is a combination oI multiple corpses Iused together into one large being, although it's impossible to tell exactly how many bodies have been reanimated to create these monsters. It is large, hardy, and like all Necromorphs is extremely violent towards the uninIected.
0Ismemberment Is the only way to elImInate the Necromorphs. Overview One oI the most extensively mutated Necromorphs, the Brute possesses an armored, spiked exoskeleton Ior deIense, oIIense, articulation, and likely serves the creature as its primary support structure as well. Made Irom calciIied skin, these thick, pliable plates hug the head, outer shoulders, Iorearms, and the anterior surIaces oI its hooked legs. Its posterior is relatively weak and devoid oI deIensive material, and Irom it sprouts a pair oI vestigial-looking arms used Ior support iI one oI it's main arms is cut oII. Covered in thick, nigh-impenetrable armor, the Brute is also quick Ior its size, and you should have Stasis handy to slow one down or they can quickly run Isaac over, and quite literally tear him apart. The Brute attacks up close with a devastating punch and a headbutt that can easily knock Isaac oII his Ieet. There are, however, speciIic weak spots just beIore the shoulder joints, and towards the back along both rear legs. They are easily identiIied by their comparatively bright yellow coloration. When attacked on the weak spots the Brute will contract within its armored plates to protect itselI. This can be used as an advantage, Ior the back oI the creature is still exposed and ripe Ior being blasted, and when combined with Stasis serious damage can be done beIore the creature recovers. II one or both oI the legs are severed, the Brute will be rendered completely immobile, but will actually resort to lobbing organic bombs Irom an otherwise rarely exposed hole in its belly. The Brute also has an enhanced Iorm. It appears black, and is much stronger, requiring more ammunition to take down. It is believed that the Iirst Brute was designed by the government using three human corpses and the genetic code oI Necromorphs. Craig MarkoII named the creature Krax, aIter one oI the corpses used to make it, and used it to kill Michael Altman. Strategy Brutes serve as mini-bosses in ead Space; they are resistant to damage and can kill careless players with ease. 0ad Spac0 O The Flamethrower is one oI the most eIIective weapons to use on a Brute. It can even be used Irom the Iront, as the Ilames can still reach its back, just keep up a continuous spray oI Iire. O When the Brute charges, use Stasis on it and at the right time, run behind it and shoot its hind leg as much as possible very quickly with either the Plasma Cutter or the Line Gun. O II you sever a leg, it will no longer run at you and instead start shooting organic bombs, which are relatively easy to catch and to Iling back using Kinesis. This tactic saves on Stasis energy and ammo. O Elite Brutes can be taken down with ease by shooting them Irom the Iront causing them to huddle into a ball, then using Stasis, getting behind them, and unloading your ammunition into their back. An upgraded Pulse RiIle is particularly useIul because oI its high damage output and high accuracy due to the large target area. O Heavy hitting weapons like the Line Gun, Contact Beam, or the Flamethrower are recommended. O Force Bombs can be used to keep the Brute at bay while inIlicting massive damage on it; one Stasis shot and some Force Bombs is enough to kill the Brute without you having to evade it even on Impossible Mode. O With the Plasma Cutter, one can simply shoot the Brute in its unarmored spot by its shoulder, possibly even managing to sever its arm. II it seeks cover in its shell, its Irontal weak spots will still be slightly exposed. O A Ripper, even when not upgraded, can be eIIective against a Brute. Although the Ripper's range is short, it can easily shred a Brute's weak point under the shoulders. This is also eIIective when the Brute goes into his shell, considering its legs are open to attack. 0ad Spac0 Extraction O The best way to kill this enemy is the same way as in the original game, by slowing it down when it charges at you (the camera will change when you do) and then use your weapons to hit him in the back. Best weapons to use are the Divet and the Pulse RiIle. O In order to kill the Brute, you must shoot the yellow lump on its back and dismember one oI its arms. Then you must use Kinesis and hurl its explosive pods back at it until it dies. 0ad Spac0 2 O An easy way to deIeat the two Brutes in the Ishimura's tram tunnel is to lure them to the end oI the hallway you have just entered through. Enter the doorway and move back and Iorth between one room and the next quickly. The Brute will spin around as you leave, and then again as you enter. Make use oI this odd glitch to get the Brute to stand still while you assault its weak points with your weaponry. But know this you will have to be very quick because the Brute turns around about a second aIter you come in the room. O &se stasis and then drop a mine Irom the Line Gun. II upgraded, you'll kill in 1-2 shots, depending upon diIIiculty. O Another easy way kill a Brute is to use stasis, then shoot the shoulders with the Contact Beam. One shot will sever each arm, killing the Brute. O Though hard to achieve, it is possible to kill the Brute with just 2 shots Irom a Iully upgraded Javelin Gun: use stasis, shoot the javelin in one oI its shoulders weak points, then activate (and hold down) the alternate Iire. II the explosion eIIect activates when the Brute is just about to charge at you, it will kill him instantly even on Zealot. Even iI it doesn't though, the Brute will be leIt with extremely low health, to the the point where a single Kinesis impale will kill him. O It is easy to kill a Brute when it charges and is close to you: use stasis, and then run around the Brute to his back. &sing the Javelin Gun, one or two shots can sever its leg, and the Brute will Iall down to the ground, and, being unable to move, use its organic bomb to attack you. At this point, aim and use |Kinesis|| to catch the bomb and throw it back to Brute, 3-5 shots will kill it without any diIIiculty. (For the Brute, this way is very ammo-eIIicient, as you do not have to upgrade the Javelin Gun to be able to cut oII its leg with two shots. However, upgraded stasis duration is highly recommended Ior an easier shot at the Brute's leg.) O An easy way to kill the Brute is with the Seeker RiIle. When the Brute charges, use stasis to slow it down. Then, use the Seeker RiIle's alternate Iire to zoom in on either shoulder's weak spot. Even iI it's not Iully upgraded, 3 to 4 shots will easily sever the arm. Then, when it starts Iiring the organic bombs, just catch them and return to sender. O The Iinal Brute oI the game in chapter 13 can be killed without Iiring a shot iI you saved a severed Exploder arm Irom the previous Iloor in the Thermal Conduit Access and have upgraded TK (conIirmed Ior every diIIiculty). Crawler
The Crawler is one oI two Necromorphs Iormed Irom inIants, the other being the Lurker. They Iirst appeared in ead Space 2. Description Crawlers are reanimated babies like the Lurker. A Crawler's skin is the same pasty gray as the Pack's. The torso is grossly enlarged with an organic explosive under its skin. The limbs are twisted backwards so it can move with the sac pointed upwards. The back legs oI the body are Iused together, giving the Crawler an almost caterpillar-like style oI movement. The Crawler combines the Lurker's mobility and the Exploder's lethality. II they are killed without hitting their explosive sac (Ior example, cutting oII the head), their bodies can be picked up using kinesis and used as a weapon against other Necromorphs, similar to the Exploder's explosive sacs. Live Crawlers cannot be picked up using kinesis. The Cyst acts more like an organic proximity mine since it has also been observed to throw its explosive sac out when a Necromorph gets too close to it, killing its own. Exploders are Necromorphs that act as suicide bombers, much like Crawlers. Their most prominent Ieature is the large, glowing pustule attached to their leIt arm, which is Iilled with a highly explosive chemical substance. Overview Exploders are apparently created Irom one whole human body that has been radically twisted. The cranium oI the creature is split open vertically in halI, no longer hosting a brain, rather tissue mass that holds the two pieces together. This Iact Iurther proves that Necromorph organisms no longer rely on their host's body nervous system, or any other system vital Ior living organisms. The leIt arm oI the creature has become stiII, no longer having any articulation points, except Ior the shoulder joint. A large pustule, Iilled with a glowing liquid chemical substance, has developed at the arm's end, making it rather heavy. This substance is extremely reactive to blunt Iorce, resulting in powerIul explosions when the work oI a Iorce applied on it surpasses a certain threshold. To counter the weight oI the leIt arm, the Exploder's right arm and legs have been properly transIormed in a way that moves the creature's center oI mass away Irom the massive pustule, thus allowing Ior a slightly more balanced walk. More speciIically, the right Iorearm has been extensively prolonged and strengthened in order to act as a leg. Meanwhile the human legs, have now Iused and twisted together Iorming a uniIied muscular limb, which mainly serves Ior the creature's locomotion. Although Exploders move sluggishly in general, they are capable oI displaying surprising bursts oI speed when they have suIIiciently closed the distance between themselves and their intended targets. Once an Exploder is within close range, it will swing its pustule right into its victim or the ground, resulting in a deadly explosion Ior anything caught in the blast radius, including the Exploder itselI. Due to their suicidal attack and relatively slow movement, they oIten attack in large groups in an attempt to overwhelm their target. Their presence can be easily detected by the sounds they make when they are within vicinity, however they do not seem to communicate with each other via vocal cues, like Stalkers do. In general, Exploders are one oI the most eIIicient Necromorph variants, with the ability to kill multiple people at the same time. Its main Iorm oI attack is assaulting its prey Irom above. Overview Flyers are one oI two types oI Necromorphs unique to Dead Space: Extraction, the other being the Grabber. They are uncommon, appearing in only a Iew stages and in small numbers, and are not very threatening - their sole attack is to Ily past the player and attempt to bite or slash them with their tail as they pass. A single hit will disrupt this attack and Iorce them to Ily away, and they cannot take much damage beIore being destroyed. This is helpIul, as they have only one dismemberment point: their thin tails. However, they are quite hard to hit Irom a distance, and the speed with which they can dive makes waiting Ior them to attack the player and then shooting them, a tricky proposition. They share a similar basic body structure with the InIector and the Leaper, but their relationship - iI any- with this Necromorph is unknown (however, it is possible that they are less/Iurther mutated versions oI the leapers.) A Flyer seems to consist oI an upper torso twisted and Ilayed into a shape vaguely resembling a stingray, topped by a partially-skinned human skull and possessing a 'tail', presumably composed oI either intertwined nerves, a dangling spinal column, or both. The arms are twisted Iorwards and Iused to the cheeks, Iorming a crude "Irame" Ior the wings. Human lungs can be seen attached to the Flyer's back, and it is possible that, similar to the Wheezers, these have been mutated into chemical production chambers and are used to help generate lighter-than-air gases that Iill up the lungs and help Flyers Ily. Its also possible that the Flyers were specially mutated by a Zero-G environment, which may also be the reason they can Ily. They have horribly twisted Iacial Ieatures such as the skin Irom the jaw and part oI the Iace have peeled away. Their jaw has also split in two. &nlike InIectors, Flyers move only through the air and possess considerable mobility and agility, making it hard to shoot them while they are in a dive. 9leose tell me tbose ote jost bots l beot Cabe Weller coot be tbetes oo ecosystem oo tbls plooet exlne Murdoch A Flyer is Iirst seen in the Megavents, attacking in a scripted event and then retreating without need Ior deIense on the player's part. Comments made by the characters indicate the presence oI Ilying creatures in this locale (including a tentative suggestion by Gabe Weller that they might be bats; only to be inIormed that there is no native ecology on Aegis VII). No clue is given as to whether these are Flyers, InIectors, or even a mixture oI both creatures. Flyers are encountered and Iought in the Zero G Therapy Room in Chapter 5, in the Vegetation Room B in Chapter 7, on the Bridge in Chapter 9 and in Maintenance Bay 47 in Chapter 10. The Grabber is a Necromorph seen mainly in ead Space. Extraction. The Grabber does make an appearance in the animated movie, Dead Space AItermath. Overview The Grabber is a Necromorph whose design was created, but whose inclusion into the game ead Space was ultimately canceled. Consisting oI a seemingly inconspicuous human corpse, albeit slightly damaged, the Grabber uses the element oI surprise by extending the mutated corpse's head an impossibly long distance towards the player and latching on to the player to either hold them still and distract them (not to mention disturb them), or drag them towards the Grabber's body while a serrated blade (Iormerly the corpse's spine) bursts out oI the same oriIice to kill the player. In this case most oI the main body's mass has been transIormed to make and store the Grabber's extremely long, muscular neck and spinal blade. While these disturbing creatures were not in ead Space, they do appear in ead Space. Extraction. They seem to continue the purpose they were to have in Dead Space. Since it was not seen in Dead Space. They Iirst appear in Chapter 6 oI Extraction when Nathan approaches a corpse, partly submerged in the water, which does not appear to have been inIected. Once he is closer in range, though, the Necromorph's head begins to shake beIore whipping upwards and startling the survivors. The Grabber then splits its human head in halI and begins to shake McNeill's head violently with its tongue Ilailing around. Once it is dispatched, Warren Eckhardt states that the creatures are adapting to their surroundings. Several more Grabbers are Iound throughout the drainage system, surprising the team by lying in wait beIore lunging up Irom beneath the surIace oI the murky water. It is unclear whether the bodies were inIected in the drains and simply mutated to best suit their needs, or iI they were inIected elsewhere and then moved to the drains by other Necromorphs. Although they do not appear to be able to move in the game, it is possible that they might be able to drag themselves into suitable ambush positions. Overview Guardians are made Irom a single human body that has been Iused together with the Corruption growing on the walls, thus establishing a Iorm oI symbiosis. Despite the severity oI the body's condition, it is clear that the host is still clinging onto liIe, still wailing in pain and agony. The Iirst thing one notices is the apparent increase in size compared to the previous stage, a result oI the Iusion with the Corruption's biomass. Moreover, the human arms, that were a characteristic trait oI the immature stage, have now disappeared, probably atrophied or otherwise consumed by the Corruption, as they currently serve no purpose. Alterations can also be seen on the head oI the host, with the lower jaw and part oI the neck completely missing, exposing the trachea and leading to a wide open thorax and a newly created sac where the abdomen used to be. The latter two, are two body structures that have been repurposed and created, respectively, in order to accommodate with the Guardian's Iunctions. The thorax cavity now serves as a place Ior the newly created tentacle appendages to rest. The creature has two kinds oI said appendages. The Iirst kind, are the appendages that are used to Iurther anchor the creature on its spot and are instantly drawn out once the Guardian has spotted a hostile in its vicinity. The second kind oI these appendages however is a single scythe tipped tentacle that serves as the creature's only means oI oIIense in close quarters and is what makes the Guardian extremely lethal. The sac is in Iact an oriIice that serves as a canal Ior the Corruption to spew out embryonic spawn, known as Pods, which will aid in attacking and keeping detected threats at a distance. In appearance, Infectors look like headless bats made Irom dead human material. The strange winged InIector acts as the Iastest vector Ior the contagion, only attacking or deIending itselI when it cannot Iind any hosts to inIect. Overview Apparently created Irom human torsos and arms, its wings are Iormed by a Ilap oI skin Ilayed away Irom the Ilanks and chest and then Iused between the Iormer host's twisted arms. The head appears to either be missing or consumed, and the pelvis is the new "head" oI the creature, with the spine providing support and attachment points Ior articulation (movement). All non-essential musculature, Iat, and organs have been removed, owing to its bony appearance along the back. This biomass is likely used to produce the inIectious agent the creature administers with its proboscis. This limb, made Irom mutated bone, muscle, and spinal tissue is the delivery mechanism used to inIect potential hosts. This is done by enveloping the host in its wings, extending the proboscis Irom the spinal cavity, and then stabbing it into the skull to inject a yellow Iluid stored in an internal bladder. In any room with the remains oI crew members, these are the beasts that should be taken down quickly beIore you get overrun with newly created Necromorphs. They seem to have a preIerence Ior corpses which have existing head wounds, possibly because this spares them having to crack the skull themselves; the InIector in the Morgue goes straight Ior the captain, with his eye-to-brain needle puncture, over any oI the other corpses, and Challus Mercer is seen to have "prepared" corpses Ior them by boring a hole in the center oI their Ioreheads. These corpses seem to be most noticeable in the Crew Quarters on the Ishimura. Dr Mercer can also be seen killing Acting ChieI Engineer Temple this way. InIectors in ead Space produce Enhanced Slashers, while in ead Space 2 "Enhanced" Iorm InIectors will make Enhanced Slashers, and regular InIectors will make regular Slashers and Enhanced Slashers. It is implied that the InIector also creates the other single-body types oI Necromorphs in the game, although only the creation oI Slasher variants is witnessed in-game. Sporting a long scythe-tipped tail made Irom the victim's intestines and legs, along with razor-sharp Iangs, they are extremely deadly Ioes. More agile than Slashers, they're some oI the Iastest enemies Isaac will encounter. Overview Leapers appear to be made Irom intact human corpses, and the extent oI their transIormation is both minimal and extensive. The arms are virtually leIt untouched, showing only claws and a slight over-development in the bicep muscles and a lengthening oI the lower limbs. The legs are completely re-shaped: Ilayed, Iused together, and lengthened into a single limb tipped with a scything blade oI considerable weight and durability. This extremity is Ilexible in the extreme, able to scrunch and coil into about a third oI its original length and launch the creature at victims at high speed. Considering that it shows no signs in an internal bone structure to push oII oI, this hints at a tremendous strength. The Iore cranial and sinus areas oI the skull appears to have been dis-articulated (detached) Irom the neck, the jaws both upper and lower being mutated and providing the only real attachment points. The upper sets oI teeth are completely gone along with most oI the palette reaching back into the throat. In their place is a pair oI multi-jointed appendages that bear a striking resemblance to the main oIIensive limbs oI Slashers. The lower jaw is split into two curved mandibles ending in kniIe-like Iangs. There is a slight lengthening oI the vertebral ridges, and the Ilexibility oI the spinal column is increased to help in locomotion. Leapers are a common Necromorph encountered in the Dead Space universe. They are able to handle Zero-G environments, using their leaping ability to great eIIect. They are about as durable as a Slasher, and actually have the same weak spots - the arms. However, they can at times require more ammo to take down due to their smaller size, jinky movements, and quick closing speed. II not quickly handled, they can rapidly become a problem due to their quick strikes and Iast attacks. In Zero-G areas, Leapers are commonly accompanied by Lurkers. There are also cases where they will be alone. On other very rare occasions, they will group together with Slashers. Leapers also have an Enhanced Iorm that is encountered later in the game. Enhanced Leapers are completely black, but are pale in Dead Space 2, and they possess glowing eyes. They are much tougher than normal Leapers, sometimes taking 2-3 shots Irom the Plasma Cutter just to sever a limb. They are also capable oI doing more damage than a normal Leaper, so keep your distance. It is one oI the only two known types oI Necromorphs that possess baby-like Ieatures, the other being the Crawler. Overview Out oI all the reanimated and recombined Iorms within the known catalog oI encountered Necromorphs, the Lurker is by Iar one oI the most disturbing, and in a very real sense is also one oI the most extensively mutated. Lacking both the coordination and ready muscle mass demanded to eIIiciently kill, the mass-produced inIants transIormed into Lurkers are treated more like a lump oI biomass than an existing template around which the pathogen recombines an oIIensive Iorm. The only inIant-like Ieatures leIt upon the creature is the general shape oI its skin, and the unchanged limbs dangling at its sides. This covering is stiII and leathery to provide protection and a support structure Ior the many sticky tentacles that now dominate the thoracic cavity and lower abdomen. Made oI muscle, they aide the Lurker in its locomotion, steadying its movements. Strong and dexterous, they allow the Lurker to walk along walls and even creep over ceilings without losing speed. It is through a slit in the lower back oI the skin covering that the most alien Ieature oI the Lurker is to be Iound. Tucked in the Iormer pelvic area, coiled like snakes, are a trio oI long, ropey tentacles. Like the limbs associated with movement, these extreme extremities are strong and Ilexible, able to whip around and bring their barbs lashing down upon anything Ioolish enough to get close. More, the tentacles are able to launch these barbs at high speed and accuracy, making the Lurker a ranged threat. The Enhanced Lurker has the same body structure as a Lurker but is entirely black, Iar more resistant to damage and Iires more lethal barbs. These are one oI the Iew Necromorphs created Irom the bodies oI children. |1||2|
Overview To say that the Pack is made up oI individuals is not entirely correct. Rather, they act as a predatory gestalt where each member works with others surrounding it to act as a greater whole. Only in very rare occasions are these Necromorphs ever encountered one at a time. Compared to other Necromorphs, the extent oI mutation invested in each member oI the Pack is minimal, showing a certain economy oI recombination not beIore encountered. Made Irom intact, largely undamaged adolescent corpses, the Pack still shows signs oI how it died, with the abdominal injuries ripped open and the dessicated, colorless skin. The Iingers and thumb oI the hands have been Iused together, reinIorced and lengthened into stiII, bony claws suitable Ior slashing, rending, and stabbing. The wrist has likewise been reinIorced, and the palm and palm muscles have become overdeveloped, giving the modiIied hands tremendous gripping strength. The shoulder blades have been extended outward Irom the rib cage, and dense muscle and tendon mass ripples in the new cavity, running down the length oI the arms, enhancing their strength. These particular mutations let the Pack tear their victims limb Irom limb. Beyond the previously mentioned changes, there are Iew other major transIormations, and the disIigurement around the mouth, nose, and eyes looks to have stopped beIore it was Iully Iormed. The soIt tissues oI the lips and nose have been sloughed away, and the teeth only show the most passing changes. The lower jaws are overstuIIed with large, peg-like protrusions, while the upper jaw is Iilled with a barely organized row oI Iangs. The eyes have simply atrophied into their sockets. The rest oI the Pack remains unchanged, and Ior reasons unknown this seems to have rendered the creatures extremely vulnerable to injury compared to other Necromorphs. A single low caliber Pulse RiIle round is able to cause dismemberment, and even cut the Pack in halI at the torso. This evidences a highly stressed or poorly maintained skeletal system and connective tissue network. Perhaps due to this Iragility, the Pack attacks by overwhelming its prey with numbers and sheer Ierocity. They are named as such due to the enormous sac that extrudes Irom their abdomens, the contents oI which are other, smaller Iorms oI Necromorphs which burst Iorth when the sac is damaged. Pregnants have also been known to, when heavily damaged, claw open their own abdominal sacs in order to release their spawn. They initially host Swarmers but, in later chapters oI the game, Pregnants carry deadlier payloads oI creatures including Lurkers and their enhanced versions, along with small creatures composed oI miscellaneous body parts, identical to those that come Irom Dividers. In addition to the ability to spawn other Necromorphs, Pregnants possess large, biological scythes that are attached to each arm, which are used to slash and rend an opponent in the same manner as Slashers. Their weight hinders their speed so they aren't as Iast as Slashers, but they can move at a brisk enough pace to out-walk Isaac when they are determined. Pregnants, unlike most Necromorphs, do not commonly travel in packs, however they do preIer the company oI other Necromorphs and, unlike the Lurkers, they can really cause havoc when they have Slashers or other Necromorph Iorms accompanying them. II an attacker is unwary, they could rupture the Pregnant with a crowd clearing weapon by accident and make things even worse Ior themselves. However, iI handled calmly and precisely, they won't be too great a threat. They are Iirst encountered in Chapter 3: Course Correction, in the Engine Room, but X-rays oI them can be Iound in the BioLab, indicating attempts were made to understand their anatomy. The Pod is apparently Iilled with an organic explosive that causes it to burst when the tentacle is severed showing that the host's relationship to the tentacle is symbiotic. While relatively weak when alone, and possessing slow reIlexes, Slashers can pose a serious threat when in groups. Overview Created Irom a single human corpse the Slasher is also one oI the most interesting and varied oI the recombinant organisms one might encounter. The variation is best brought attention to by the creature's most distinguishing Ieature: its slashing arms. These limbs are sometimes created by mutating existing limbs, lengthening and reinIorcing them, driving a long, heavy blade through the palm. In others the slashing arms are entirely new appendages sprouting Irom the shoulder blades, showing utterly alien bone and ligaments (the band-like structures that attach bones to each other and bones to muscle) wrapped around with speciIically overdeveloped musculature. Like an alligator jaw, in both types these limbs are strongest moving only in certain directions: along the inward sweep and downward stroke. This makes the attacking blow devastating, and any grasping hold initially unbreakable, however unless quickly disabled a victim can easily break Iree and even retaliate. For this reason grappling Slashers are quick to strike Ior the neck, tearing into vital blood vessels. Another varying Ieature upon Slashers is the lower set oI limbs. In all but one variant, these atrophied limbs sprout out Irom the abdomen. In certain cases these appear to be the original arms clapped down the sides oI the body, the Iorelimbs hanging limp beIore the hips. In others spindly, vestigial arms poke out Irom the exposed abdominal cavity, providing no other visible use than in keeping the belly exposed to the open. Regardless oI their origins, these limbs seem serve no purpose, as they are too small and lacking in blades or claws to slash or rend, and have not been seen to aid in a grapple. Certain Ieatures are all but universal to the Slasher breed, such as the stiII vocal chords and hunched back to better angle the slashing arms. The bones oI the Ieet are Iused and lengthened while the heel bone is extended almost parallel to the angle oI the sole, Iorming a sharp peg that aids in balance. While this modiIied digitigrade (toe-Ioot) may aid the creature in rapidly crawling through vents and running, it is less than optimal in simple walking, and as such Slashers have diIIiculty holding their balance without constantly moving their slashing limbs in counter-weight. "Spitter" is the new designation Ior Iemale Slashers in ead Space 2. Description Like standard Slashers, Spitters have large, bladed arms protruding Irom their shoulders and their original human arms are intact on their sides holding their chest open. All Spitters are Iemale. Some have a large mutated jaw, similar to a Leaper, which they can extend when in close combat. Another variant has lumps on its head; however, its upper torso and much oI the Iace seem to retain a human look to them. Their most prominent and deadliest Ieature is their ability to spit high-speed acidic bile at their opponent. II one is close enough you will be able to see their enlarged lungs. Combat Behavior Spitters have attacks similar to both male Slashers and Pukers. From a distance, it will spit a Iast glob oI acidic bile at Isaac. &p close, it will slash at Isaac with her blades, as well as attempt to grab him. Its grapple animation varies depending on the variant. II it has the extended jaw, it will grab Isaac in the same manner as Slashers; it will bite into his neck. II it has bumps on her Iace, it will repeatedly stab Isaac in his shoulder, just like Zealot-variant Slashers. Spitters tend to be loners, but can be accompanied by Pukers or other Slashers, attacking Irom a distance while other Necromorphs close in, making Spitters a priority to take out Iirst. Although their ability to spit can make them troublesome, Spitters can be killed in the same Iashion as Slashers: by cutting oII both oI their arms with a weapon like the Plasma Cutter or the Line Gun. You can also use Stasis Irom a distance in order to counteract the threat oI it spitting at you. Even then, like the Puker's long-range attack, a Spitter's bile can be caught with Kinesis and thrown back, resulting in an instant kill. Also, shooting oII its head or legs will take away her ability to spit altogether. Later in the game, Spitters tend to spit more instead oI charging. They approach slowly and quietly in order not to be discovered whilst they get closer, making them harder to notice. They are Iirst encountered in Chapter 4 oI ead Space 2, and they are the only Necromorph strain partially made out oI animal remains. Description Stalkers bear long, horny claws ending in dangerous tips. While not eIIicient at slashing, they can still impale, knock down, and rend their victims. The ribcage is spread wide open, though with most Necromorphs, there is a lack oI any digestive organs, and only vestigial remains oI previously vital organs. Well maintained musculature in the limbs and back lead to a reinIorced spinal column and neck capped by the creature's most distinguishing Ieature. The skull is largely exposed, sporting a thick skull cap covered in bony protrusions to aid in crushing and bashing. The upper jaw and nasal cavities are leIt largely intact, while the cranial dome is squashed down to provide a more even, durable striking surIace, which is Iurther supported by the cheek bones. &nlike many Necromorphs, this highly mutated skull is the hardest point on the creature, but also the point oI an instantly Iatal dismemberment. Arguably the most intelligent and opportunistic Necromorphs, Stalkers work in groups to distract and Ilank their prey. |3| They will run around, hide, and peek behind cover, trying to lure Isaac into exposed areas. When they attack, they charge towards their prey while emitting a high- pitched screech with their limbs tucked behind them Ior protection and/or Ior streamlining. Stalker pack members will take turns in attacking him when they Ieel Isaac has let his guard down, then Ilee beIore he has a chance to strike back. They specialize in mind games and hide and seek tactics. They are also quite resilient; while charging, their skulls and torsos are able to absorb dozens oI pulse rounds without disrupting their attack, even on normal diIIiculty. They are redoubtable Ioes, and in large numbers or paired with Exploders arguably the most severe threat in ead Space 2. Since Stalkers attack methodically, there are certain patterns they use, one oI which is peeking at Isaac. Peeking Irom around cover is usually Iollowed up by a charge. II Isaac sneaks up on a Stalker Irom behind, it will run Ior new cover instead oI conIronting him. However, iI Isaac approaches the Stalker Irom the Iront aIter it peeks out or "barks", the Stalker will land an unstoppable headbutt iI Isaac goes around that corner. Stalkers also show awareness oI being damaged, unlike other Necromorphs, preIerring to bolt to a hiding spot iI it receives any damage. They also have an Enhanced Iorm that has double the power, speed, and health oI its original counterpart. The Tripod is a large three-legged Necromorph Iorm. The Iront two legs appear to have been arms (possibly made Irom several diIIerent humans) and its leg seems to have been Iormed Irom the host's original legs; twisted into a tail-like Iorm, much like the Leaper (except that in this instance it is actually another leg, not a tail). Tripods are extremely violent, even by Necromorph standards. They attack Isaac with little to no regard oI their health. The Iirst Tripod tries to reach and kill Isaac even when both its arms are severed. There are two types oI Tripods: male and Iemale. They both have a similar body structure, including a bladed tongue, but there are several diIIerences. Males are the more common type oI Tripod Isaac will encounter throughout the game. It appears slim and is grotesquely Iormed by human bodies. It attacks by swinging its arm in a wide arc, slamming its Iist into the ground, Ilailing around its bladed tongue, or by pouncing on its victim Irom a distance. Its only weakpoints are two yellow pustules; one Ior each arm. AIter both arms are dismembered, it will Iinally die. Females, on the other hand, are the rarest Tripod Isaac will encounter, so much so that he only encounters one throughout the entire game. &nlike Males, these appear to have smooth, pale skin, as well as other Iemale characteristics, including long hair, petite Iacial Ieatures, and signs oI pregnancy. A Female Tripod is encountered by Isaac in the Church oI &nitology . The Church Tripod Iirst pounces on Isaac Irom above, knocking him to the ground. It then grabs and drags him across the Iloor, attempting to hit him with its bladed tongue. The tongue acts similarly to a Drag Tentacle, except with a yellow sack made Irom an inIant as a weak point. Once Isaac shoots the sack enough times, it will explode, rendering the bladed tongue no longer eIIective, and the Iemale Tripod will release him and retreat. Isaac encounters his Iirst Tripod aIter he gets through his Iirst vacuum-exposed section oI the Sprawl. They additionally appear on Aegis VII and on the Sprawl in the ead Space 2 DLC ead Space 2. Severed. Description The Twitchers are the result oI the Necromorph inIection contaminating the corpses oI people who were equipped with Stasis modules (such as soldiers or security personnel). They are physically similar to Slashers. A disturbing side eIIect oI the transIormation is that the Stasis Modules the security personnel were equipped with became Iused with the resulting creature, and the eIIect oI the Stasis Module is strangely reversed, with terriIying results. Because oI the Stasis Module merged into their bodies, Twitchers can react and move several times Iaster than any other Necromorph variant, making them very hard to hit beIore they close in to melee range. It also causes them to have highly erratic and spastic movements, and their Ieatures seem to blur as they move when seen close up. Due to their incredible speed, they are very capable oI dodging Isaac's weapons in harder diIIiculties when they see it coming. They also make distinctive jabbering noises when they get close. Their name is derived Irom their constant twitching and spasmodic behavior. Their design is similar to that oI a Slasher; however, this is hard to notice due to their speed. Their heads, legs and bodies, retain a vaguely human Iorm, albeit much chunkier and muscular than Slashers. They lack the small chest appendages oI the Slashers, but their talons are much larger. Their heads have a massive, hollowed-out indentation on the top oI the skull, and tiny tentacles Iill the gap. They also seem to be missing both their eyes. Furthermore, their Iaces seem to be almost static; they never change their Iacial expression, which is Iixed in a blank and hollow stare. The armor they are Iused to is partially visible though gaps in their skin, and two large sections protrude Irom their backs like the closed wings oI a beetle. They have a very beetle-like appearance, combining the armor on their back, their hunched Iorm, and their Iront limbs, which are reminiscent oI an insect. The inIected Titan Station Security OIIicers remain largely humanoid and still wear most oI their armor, so they don't seem to be as extensively inIected as the 'alors marines. However, they are still just as deadly. Overview Wheezers are a type oI Necromorph Iound only in the sixth chapter oI Dead Space. There are only a total oI eight Wheezers encountered that are poisoning the air, and all must be killed in order to access the Iood storage container the Leviathan resides in. They resemble humans more than any oI the other Necromorph species, except Ior their lungs, which are now many times the normal size oI human lungs and located outside oI their body, taking up most oI their backs. They are constantly in a kneeling position because their arms and legs are Iused together, and as a result are incapable oI any movement. A distinct strained breathing sound can be heard in the vicinity oI a Wheezer, hence the name. They are most likely the "terraIormers" oI any Necromorph ecosystem. Wheezers are virtually harmless; while being in the same room as them drains the player's oxygen, they lack any oIIensive capability and can be dispatched quickly. The Boss has ten yellow weak spots, Iour on its chest, one on each oI its limbs, a large one on its back, and another large one on its head, all oI these need to be destroyed to deIeat the Boss. Strategy The Boss attacks by lashing out its tongue at Vandal. It does this either by sliding it against the Iloor to trip her or to slam her against the Iloor (it will signal this attack by liIting its head). It will also Iire projectiles at her. The Boss' tongue has several blades on the tip used to harm Vandal. It attacks with its tongue in several ways. By swinging across the Iloor to trip Vandal, by shooting it out (similar to a lizard), and by slamming it onto the platIorm that Vandal stands on (which also instantly kills any Necromorph it touches). It also attacks by shooting blades out oI two oI its arms like a Lurker. The Boss also has some control over other Necromorphs, during the battle it calls upon several diIIerent Necromorphs to aid it in battle. Having a Iully upgraded RIG can make this battle somewhat easier. Wait Ior it to liIt its head, revealing the Iour tumor- like growths. Note that using the Corer's secondary attack is easier Ior taking out the growths continuously. Shoot them and it will start to reveal more weak spots. Watch out Ior Slashers and Lurkers that will try to distract you Irom the battle. AIter shooting the two tentacles holding the Boss up it will collapse and hang onto the Iloor. The Hive Mind was unwillingly created, as a result oI testing the experimental Red Marker Ior military purposes over two centuries prior to the events oI Dead Space, on the remote planet oI Aegis VII. When the Marker proved to be too dangerous to wield as a weapon, Iurther experimentation with it was aborted and it was used one last time in order to suppress the Hive Mind; a tower-like being that is the source oI the Necromorph outbreak on Aegis VII and, subsequently, the &SG Ishimura. The creature's appearance and general shape resemble a segmented worm, albeit one oI titanic proportions. Its Iull size is never truly shown, as an unknown portion oI the creature is out oI view, hidden inside a crater. Its visible portion, however, can be broken down into two segments; a head and a thorax. The head's prominent Ieature is the creature's mouth, consisting oI an outer and an inner mouth, each with their own rows oI teeth. The Hive Mind is able to spit acidic projectiles Irom its mouth. Around the mouth there are Iive yellow glowing sacks, that strongly resemble eyes but it is unknown iI they are serving such a purpose. The thorax Ieatures various branch like appendages on the backside, not showing any apparent Iunction whatsoever, and a closed up thorax cavity on the Iront side which shelters Iive more yellow sacks, apparently vital organs oI the Hive Mind. The Hive Mind is capable oI utilizing its immense tentacles, also a characteristic trait oI it. It uses three oI them during the Iight with Isaac however it is almost certain it has more than three. The tentacles grow Irom some part oI the creature that is well bellow its thorax area. What sets the Hive Mind apart Irom any other Necromorph, is its ability to telepathically control all other Necromorphs, justiIying its name. Characteristically, when Isaac Clarke returned the Marker to its pedestal, rendering the Hive Mind dormant, all Necromorph activity was immediately ceased until Kendra Daniels removed the Marker once again. AIter reawakening, the Hive Mind becomes aggressive and attacks Isaac and the escaping Kendra as they make it into the shuttle bay. AIter killing Kendra, it curls its tentacles around Isaac, Iorming an inescapable enclosure, initiating the Iinal Iight. The Hive Mind makes a brieI, but impacting appearance in Dead Space: Extraction. AIter making their way through the Megavents, the newly assembled group proceeds to Iight their way to the last remaining shuttle on the colony. |2| Just as the "IireIight" seems to have subsided, a large tentacle bursts through the Ilight deck, the camera panning up as it towers overhead and slams down near the group. Gabe Weller does his best to repel the Hive Mind as Nathan McNeill Iights his way through another wave oI Necromorphs, Irantically trying to open the shuttle doors. The Iull scope oI the Hive Mind is seen as it tries to swat the shuttle out oI the sky aIter launch. It was created by inserting a piece oI necrotic tissue, obtained Irom the Ilesh-like growths covering certain sections oI the Ishimura, directly into the cranium oI an unknown crew member. |note 1|
In ead Space 2, a Necromorph known as the &bermorph has many similarities to the Hunter, and stalks Isaac throughout the last two chapters oI the game. Overview The Hunter physically resembles a Slasher, possessing large blades that are attached to a pair oI elongated arms. It is larger and more powerIul than the standard Slasher variants and, unlike other Iorms oI Necromorph, it is able to regenerate lost limbs in seconds, meaning that conventional dismemberment tactics only serve to temporarily incapacitate it. The Hunter Iirst appears during Chapter 5: Lethal Devotion. Challus Mercer keeps the creature stored in a stasis tube in the Chem Lab on the Medical Deck, just outside the Cryogenics Storage Room. When Isaac enters the lab to mix the poisonous compound, Dr. Mercer awakens the creature in an attempt to kill Isaac. Isaac eventually escapes aIter learning oI the creature's regenerative abilities. The creature stalks Isaac throughout the chapter, as he attempts to complete his objectives. Isaac Iinally Iaces it down in the Cryogenic Lab, where he manages to Ireeze the creature inside a cryogenic tube, supposedly taking care oI the problem once and Ior all. However, as the game progresses, it is hinted that the creature has been thawed and is once again stalking Isaac, as Isaac hears the creature several times and even sees it once whilst in the main elevator in Chapter 7. The Hunter reappears in Chapter 10, just aIter Isaac collects the third navigation card. Immediately aIter grabbing the card, Dr. Mercer contacts the player and reveals that he has thawed the creature. Right aIter this transmission, the Hunter bursts out oI a ceiling vent and attacks, Iorcing Isaac to retreat. Towards the end oI the chapter, when Isaac goes to test Iire the engines oI the shuttle in the Executive Shuttle Hangar Bay, the Hunter once again reveals itselI and attempts to kill him. To deIeat it, Isaac lures it towards the back oI the shuttle, stalls the Hunter via either Stasis or dismemberment, and test Iires the engines again, completely incinerating it. The slug was blocking the blast doors that allowed the USG Ishimura to broadcast a Iutile message to warn the USM 'alor to not open the escape pod they had retrieved that contains a slasher. The Slug had to be Iought using one oI the Ishimura's anti-asteroid cannons, speciIically ADS Cannon 48. During the Iight, it would use its Iive tentacles to hurl objects at the tower, with each tentacle having a weak point appearing as a bulbous yellow mass close to the slug's body. DeIeating the Slug required the destruction oI all Iive tentacles - while at the same time using the cannons to destroy the incoming debris thrown by the Slug. Immediately Iollowing the Slug's demise, it releases its grip on the Ishimura and begins Iloating oII into space. At which point Kendra is able to broadcast a warning to the USM 'alor, telling them not to open the escape pod they retrieved. The return broadcast shows a Marine oI the 'alor being slain by a Necromorph, indicating that the USM 'alor has been lost. The 'alor then crashes into the Ishimura, causing considerable damage. The presence oI similar tentacles to the Leviathan and a similar size suggest the Slug and the Leviathan are related, Irom the same larger creature, or originated Irom the same rock chunk. The Slug was originally thought to have arrived on the ship aIter the initial inIection, due to the Iact that ADS Cannon 48 would have engaged it. However, Dead Space: Extraction proves this point incorrect; as Nathan McNeill disabled this particular ADS cannon (and possibly the system itselI), the cannon would have been unable to Iire at anything until Isaac came to manually reactivate it. is the second boss oI ead Space. Extraction, a successor to The &rchin .
Overview "The Spider" appears at the end oI Chapter 9: Escaping the Ishimura, and is Iound crawling along the exterior oI the &SG Ishimura. The Spider attacks Nathan McNeill aIter he returns Irom disabling the ADS Cannon, and is a Iormidable opponent. The Spider has an elongated, armor- plated Iorm, somewhere between a spider and a centipede, and has a variety oI attacks and weak points. It attacks in a set phase oI actions, each oI which has a speciIic counter, and damage must be dealt over these phases. The Spider has Iour legs and two arms. It's mouth is armor plated and inside that mouth is an eye with 'Iingers' around it. The Iingers can carry big yellow/orange sacs which, when blown up, spawn Leapers at the player. Once the battle is over, the Spider Iloats away. McNeill thinks he's saIe just as the Spider returns and Iires a spike that pierces his arm. His suit begins to run out oI air and McNeill must hack his arm oII with the Rock Saw. Overview The &bermorph is a tall bipedal Necromorph, its shape and Ieatures strongly resembling these oI the Hive Mind. Its head is almost directly connected to its body, through a very short and stiII neck, and Ieatures Iive red glowing eyes, symmetrically placed on it. The &bermorph's torso is undeniably the bulkiest structure oI the creature, which is only logical considering the pair oI massive arms it has to support. It sports a pair oI claw-like appendages on its abdomen and the bone structure oI the ribcage is clearly visible both on the Iront and the back side, with the back showcasing some rather unusual Iormations. The &bermorph utilizes its two enormous arms, each ending in a triad oI long claws, in order to impale and mutilate its prey, via brute Iorce. This creature's unique characteristic is its ability to regenerate lost tissue mass and bone, at an uncanny Iast rate, making it virtually impossible to kill; a trait it shares in common with the Hunter. &nlike the Hunter however, which shows signs oI various degrees oI decomposition, in tandem with the Iact that it was made Irom a human corpse, the &bermorph shows no signs oI decay and wounds, nor any indication that it originated Irom a Iormer human being. It has a dark brown smooth skin covering its body, and its overall appearance is rather distinctive and alien in nature, making it look as iI it is a complete original organism and not just repurposed human remains. It can be seen Ior the Iirst time when Isaac Clarke cuts oII the power to a large section oI the Government building, allowing Necromorphs to enter. Isaac Iirst encounters it in the beginning oI Chapter 14 aIter he leaves the NoonTech Diagnostic Machine and it chases Isaac most oI the way to the Site 12 Marker. Presumably, the &bermorph is destroyed along with the rest oI the Sprawl. Its origin is a mystery, but it bears some resemblance to The Leviathan and The Slug, consisting oI a rather Iormless main body surrounded by multiple tentacles. SpeciIically, the &rchin has Iour large tentacle "arms" tipped with yellow, eye-like orbs that can be protected by a tripartite 'eyelid', a triad oI smaller, rear-mounted tentacle-mouths that can disgorge explosive sacs (akin to those produced by the Iemale Slashers), and a Irontal tentacle tipped with a knot oI Iaintly luminescent, swollen, gnarled, yellowish cartilage. As with The Leviathan, The Slug, and Drag Tentacles, this last tendril is its vulnerable spot. The &rchin is discovered growing in one oI the Water PuriIication Iacilities in the Ishimuras vast Sewer System, below Hydroponics, which may mean that the &rchin is an oIIshoot oI The Leviathan. It spends most oI the battle submerged, attacking by battering the player character with its primary arms. The player can disrupt these attacks by shooting at the 'eye' in either 'hand', a task best suited Ior rapid-Iiring, instant-hit weapons such as the P-Sec Pistol or the Pulse RiIle, AIter a certain number oI swings, the player will then move to a raised ventilation shaIt on either side oI the &rchin and enter Iree-look mode; when this happens, the player needs to use Stasis on the Ian, whereupon they will head into the tunnel and the &rchin will try to grab them, only to have its tentacle severed when the Ian starts up again, destroying that Ian. AIter its Iirst set oI primary arms has been severed, its secondary set will be deployed. Explosive barrels will now begin to emerge Irom under the water. The player must use Kinesis to grab these and hurl them at the arms when the 'eyes' are exposed, blowing the tentacles apart. Only a single hit with a barrel is needed to destroy an arm, and it is best to wait until an arm is lunging in to grab the player. II the player is grabbed, though, they will be drawn to a now-exposed mouth, which will repeatedly bite the player until they either die or shoot the mouth suIIiciently to persuade the &rchin to release them. When the secondary arms have been destroyed, the main body oI the &rchin will surIace and it will begin disgorging explosive pods, either singularly or in batteries oI three. The player may use Kinesis to grab these pods and throw them at the knot oI yellow cartilage rapidly swinging back and Iorth in Iront oI the &rchin's body, or simply open Iire with their weapons. Approximately three or more direct hits will destroy the &rchin. While it poses no direct threat to Isaac Clarke, its unsteady texture and surIace slow him down when tread upon, making him an easier target Ior other Necromorphs. It's also been documented to remove Iree oxygen Irom the atmosphere and metabolizing it into unknown poisonous gases in conjunction with Wheezers, posing a threat to the long term existence oI Isaac and any remaining crew oI the Ishimura. Description The Corruption appears to be one oI the Iirst stages oI the Necromorph inIestation, and the most prominent indicator oI the bio-recombinant abilities that all Necromorphic liIeIorms possess. Wherever present, larger numbers oI Necromorphs are usually encountered so it seems to provide not just a more suitable environment Ior the Necromorphs, but also may aid the Necromorphs in their continual survival in some way. This was observed on the Aegis VII Colony when Gabe Weller, Nathan McNeill and Karklins entered the colony morgue, only to discover that the bodies were gone without any sign oI an InIector having been there such as the yellow bile emitted when a corpse is inIected. The implication here is that the bodies oI the morgue occupants were combined to Iorm the Corruption. This can also be supported by the events witnessed near the end oI the Dead Space comics, where a seeming biomass contained the Iace oI Vera Cortez, Abraham Neumann's deceased partner. Also, seeing how Danvers' log Iound on the Engineering Deck explains The Corruption, it is likely that it already started spreading throughout the Ishimura while there were still numerous survivors on board. Overall, it seems that The Corruption acts primarily as both an environmental adjuster and a universal source oI ready biomass Ior rapid recombination. This latter use oI The Corruption is most clearly evidenced by Guardians. Relationship with Necromorphs It is revealed through ship logs read to you by Kendra Daniels, that the Corruption is a habitat changer. This suggests that either the Necromorphs could not easily inIest the ship without its presence or that the hostile creatures would be very weak. There is some strong indications that this might be true, as almost without Iail the weakest, most Irail Necromorphs are encountered in areas where almost none oI The Corruption is seen. The Corruption also seems to be able to produce Pods during certain events. In addition to being a habitat changer, the Corruption helps the Necromorphs adapt to the various environments they travel through, Zero-G and vacuums Ior example. The Corruption may also play a role in what Iorms oI Necromorphs are created, collecting and sending inIormation to the Hive Mind so as to more eIIectively attack its targets.
