Objective:

 construct a sound terminator.

Introduction

Bringing your paragraph to an end is quite a challenging task just like coming up with a good
topic sentence followed by well thought-out developers. The ending sentence of your paragraph
should be written expertly.

Terminator

 A terminator is also known as a clincher or clincher sentence.


 A terminator is a sentence that brings the paragraph to an end.
 It is important to note that the end in question is no ordinary end.
 The purpose of a terminator is to bring the paragraph to a satisfactory end.

Satisfactory end of a paragraph

 A sound terminator is one which has an air of finality.

 The phrase “air of finality” implies that the terminator should fully convince the
reader that the paragraph has definitely come to a satisfactory end and that beyond the
terminator you will describe the room no more.

 To write a remarkable terminator you should restate some words used in the topic
sentence and bring in a totally new dimension to indicate that the paragraph will not
focus on the idea of dirt beyond your terminator.

 The best way to write a terminator is to use some words used in the topic sentence
and then in the same sentence bring in a new dimension. A full explanation on this is
given here just after an example of a terminator.

 Following on is a terminator to a paragraph whose topic sentence reads:


“The room was extremely dirty.”
Terminator

Given such a horrendous scenario, definitely the room needed to be given a thorough cleaning.

Analysis of terminator

 The above terminator “puts the frosting on the cake” in that: it mentions the room and
the idea of tidying it up render the words “the room needed to be given a thorough
cleaning” which shows that the paragraph is still focused on the idea of dirt in the room
that should be removed.

 It is crucial to realize that once the dirt in the room has been removed the writer of the
paragraph can no longer talk about dirt because it is not a key issue anymore.

 The words borrowed from the topic sentence are “The room” and the new dimension to
the sentence is comes in through the clause,” needed to be given a thorough cleaning.”

 The statement, “needed to be given a thorough cleaning,” tells your reader that after the
act of cleaning or tidying up the room you will not write about the idea of dirt in the room
because it is now a past event.

 No doubt, the above terminator perfectly brings the paragraph to a satisfactory end.

WARNING: Guard against writing a developer under the false impression that it is a
terminator.

Sample Paragraph

Put together your paragraph should read as follows:

The room was extremely dirty. Tucked away in one corner of the room was an oval-shaped table
clothed in a blanket of dust. The royal blue wall of the spacious room was plastered with
tangible filth. In the middle of the room, on the sleek linoleum, lay strewn rotten peels of banana.
The entire vast ceiling was colonized by kingdoms of cobwebs. Given such a horrendous
scenario, definitely the room needed to be given a thorough cleaning.

Task 1

Write a terminator for a paragraph which begins with the topic sentences in 1(a) to (f)

1 (a) Simon was the most intelligent of all the Moyo brothers.
(b) The girls were exceedingly distraught by Susan’s lies.
(c) It rained incessantly last night in Bulawayo.
(d) In the dead of the night fire gutted our house.
(e) The award winning farmer, Mr. Steele, had a bumper harvest.
(f) The Principal strongly reprimanded the culprits.

Task 2

Write a terminator for a paragraph which begins with the topic sentence: The school has hit the
headlines not so much in terms of your academic achievement but in terms of your notoriety and
ask family member, friend or neighbour to analyse and give you feedback on the relevance of
your terminator.

Conclusion

Your terminator should have an air of finality as explained above. It should feature some words
featured in the topic sentence and also bring in a new dimension.
