Symbiotic Relationship Simulation

This simulation models how symbiotic relationships affect population size over time. Students will each receive a card indicating an organism and its relationship. They will count out beads representing their initial population. Students will then find their symbiotic partner and record their organisms and relationship. They will collect beads over multiple 10-year periods according to their relationship type, recording population sizes after each period. Students will repeat with new partners to experience different relationships.

Symbiotic Relationship

Simulation
➔ In this activity, you will model how symbiotic relationships affect population size.
Number of beads represent your population size.
➔ You will each receive a card that shows an animal on one side and a relationship on
the other side.
➔ You will also each receive one empty cup and see a large container filled with beads in
the center of your table.
➔ Each person will count out and take 20 beads from the center and place them in their
own empty cup.
➔ Each person will then dump their 20 beads into the clear container.
◆ You will be given 10 seconds to retrieve as many beads as you can and place
them back in your cup. Record this in your chart in the first box next to initial
population under organism 1.
◆ Repeat this step 2 more times to fill out the remaining two initial population spots..
➔ INITIAL POPULATION= organisms living separately
➔ YEAR 10, YEAR 20, YEAR 30, ETC. = organisms living in direct contact
➔ After filling out the initial population section for ORGANISM 1 on your chart, replenish
your clear cup and make sure it has 20 beads total.
➔ Once the time to collect initial population is up, find a poster
around the room that matches the relationship on your card.
➔ Once you find the poster that correctly identifies your organism,
find the other person holding the card that matches your
organism/relationship.
◆ Devil matches with dead face (predation), happy face with
happy face (mutualism), happy face with meh face
(commensalism) , or happy face with sad face (parasitism)
◆ When you believe you are matched with the correct person,
go find a seat at a lab table and we will come check to
assure you are correct.
➔ Record your organism, your partner's organism, the relationship
of both organisms, and the starting number of beads for each
organism on the chart on your sheet.
➔ Pour your beads and your partners
beads into clear container.
➔ Each person will use one plastic
spoon to capture the beads. Note:
You may use only the spoon to collect
beads. You may not use your free
hand.
ORGANISM 1: ORGANISM 2: RELATIONSHIP

INITIAL
POPULATION

YEAR 10

YEAR 20

YEAR 30
★ When your teacher indicates, you will have a feeding period of 10 seconds to collect as many beads
as possible. Put beads in your cup as you capture them.
○ IF the relationship is PARASITIC, BOTH organisms collect for 10 seconds. Once the 10 “year”
period is over, the PARASITE has 2 extra seconds to scoop beads out of the HOST’S cup.
PARASITE places beads taken from hosts cup in a new separate empty cup that does NOT
get added back into the tray during the 10 second population growing period. PARASITES
OWN COLLECTED BEADS GET ADDED TO TOTAL AMOUNT ON TABLE. (TOTAL IN BOTH
CUPS ADDED)
○ IF the relationship is MUTUALISTIC, BOTH organisms collect for 10 seconds. Once the 10
“year” period is over, BOTH organisms have 2 seconds to collect beads from the “community”
cup in the middle of the table.
○ IF the relationship is COMMENSAL, BOTH organisms collect for 10 seconds. Once the 10
“year” period is over, the BENEFITING ORGANISM has 2 extra seconds to collect beads from
the “community” cup in the middle of the table. OTHER ORGANISM does not collect during 2
extra seconds.
○ IF the relationship is none of the above and just a PREDATOR/PREY relationship, PREY
collects for the first 10 seconds and predator does nothing. Once the 10 “year” period is over
for the prey, the PREDATOR closes eyes and chooses a color of bead. The PREY gives all
color if bead in their own cup to PREDATORS cup. WHEN SETTING UP FOR ROUND 2:
PREDATOR DOES NOT DUMP BEADS BACK INTO BUCKET, ONLY PREY DOES.
➔ Once the “10 years” are over for
BOTH organisms in your pair, write
down the final number of beads for
each organism on your chart.
➔ Repeat the last slide TWO MORE
TIMES with the same partner, making
sure to record the total number of
beads per organism after each “10
years.”
➔ AFTER recording data and population size 3 times with one
partner, restore your beads to the original number and cup
and return back to your assigned seat.
◆ Your teacher will come around and collect your cards.
◆ Your teacher will redistribute cards to you and you will
receive a different organism.
➔ REPEAT SLIDES 3-6 AGAIN WITH YOUR NEW
ORGANISM/RELATIONSHIP/PARTNER until you have
completed this for a total of 3 times (three different partner
pairs)
➔ MAKE SURE ALL THREE DATA TABLES ARE FILLED
WITH THE CORRECT INFORMATION.
