Week 3: SOUND, HEAT AND LIGHT
ENERGY
INTRODUCTION
Energy is around us. It can make things move. It can also
produce light, heat, and sound. Our daily life depends on energy, from
the moment we get up from our bed until the end of the day. Our
phones and computers will not work unless it has energy in the form
of electricity in its battery. Appliances like the television and
refrigerators will also not work since they require energy, in the form
of electricity, to do so.
Different forms of energy like heat and light can be transformed
to electricity. Doing so will not only help us make a lot happen, but it
can also save our environment. This chapter will help you understand
about the different energies around us—how they can make things
move, how they are related to each other, and how they are
transformed to generate electricity. This chapter will help you
understand about the different energies around us— how they can

Sound, heat, and light are other forms of energy that may be
explained in terms of the movements of smaller objects. Sound is
produced by vibrating bodies, like the strings of a guitar. Without any
medium, sound cannot travel. Heat or thermal energy is the energy
from the movement of tiny particles in matter. Light is the only energy
that we can readily see. It is also produced by vibrations of very small
particles in matter.
SOUND
Sound is produced in different ways. The simplest way is when
objects hit each other, Clap your hands. Drop a book on the table.
Marbles and billiard balls produce clicks as they collide, Percussion
instruments also produce sound this way. Sound produced this way
come from the kinetic energy lost when moving bodies collide.
Sound is produced by making vibrations. When you speak, sing
or hum, your vocal chords vibrate. Wind instruments make their
sound by sustaining the vibration of columns of air in their tubes.
Stringed instruments make sound when their strings vibrate. In
speakers, a part called the diaphragm vibrates to produce sound.

LET’S GO BEYOND
Fireworks display sound,
light and heat at the same time.
What are the elements or
mechanisms in using fireworks the
give off light, sound and heat?
Fireworks contain metal salts like
magnesium and aluminum that
produces bright, intense
colors when ignited. Stored energy inside the metal flakes is
transformed to light, sound, and heat energy when metal flakes are
burned.
LET’S CHECK!
Directions: Write True if the statement is correct and change the
underlined word/s if it is wrong. Write your answer in a piece of paper.
1. Sound is produced through vibrations.
