1. Davao Prison and Penal Farm

YEAR: 1932
AREA: 30,000 hectares with a prison reservation of 8,000 hectares
PROVINCE: Davao Del Norte
REGION: Davao Region (Region XI)
PERSON: Governor Dwight Davis
SUB COLONY: Panabo sub-colony, Kapalong Sub-colony
MAJOR PRODUCTS: Abaca, Banana, Rice, Copra, Cattle and other farm products and now the
biggest abaca plantation in the country. BANANA - entered a joint venture agreement with
Lagum Development Company in a 3,000 hectares banana plantation - exported to Saudi, Egypt
and others.

2. Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm

YEAR: 1904
AREA: 36,000 hectares
PROVINCE: Puerto Princesa City, Palawan
REGION: Southwestern Tagalog Region (Mimaropa)
PERSON: established on the orders of Governor Forbes who was then the Secretary of
Commerce and police
SUB COLONY: Inagawan Sub-colony, Montible Sub-colony, Santa Lucia Sub-colony,
Central Sub-colony
PRINCIPAL PRODUCTS: Rice, Corn, Copra, Logs and minor forest products and cattle.

3. The New Bilibid Prison

YEAR: 1940
AREA: initial land area of 551 hectares (1,360 acres), but 104 hectares (260 acres) were
transferred to a housing project of the Department of Justice
PROVINCE: Muntinlupa, Metro Manila
REGION: National Capital Region (NCR)
PERSON: BuCor Chief Gregorio Catapang Jr.
SUB COLONY:
FACILITIES: The maximum security compound - which houses inmates serving a prison sentence
of more than 20 years. The medium security compound - which houses those serving less than
20 years. The minimum security compound - which houses those close to completing their
sentence or who are at least 70 years old.

4. Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm

YEAR: 1954
AREA: 16,190 hectares
PROVINCE: Occidental Mindoro
REGION: Southwestern Tagalog Region (Mimaropa)
PERSON: established by President Ramon Magsaysay through Executive Order No. 547
SUB COLONY: Three sub-colonies were later organized. One is a reservation that, to this day,
remains part of a protected rainforest. Another is in a coastal area. The third was used by the
national government as a relocation site for refugees from the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991.
PRIMARY PRODUCT: rice that is used also to supply the NBP.

5. San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm

YEAR: 1870
AREA: 1,246 hectares
PROVINCE: Zamboanga
REGION: Zamboanga Peninsula (Region IX)
PERSON: established during the tenure of Governor General Ramon Blanco
SUB COLONY:
PRINCIPAL PRODUCT: Copra
SECONDARY PRODUCT: Rice, Corn, Coffee, Cattle and live stock

6. Leyte Regional Prison

YEAR: 1973
AREA: 861.66 hectares forested area on top of a mountain surrounded by mountain ranges
PROVINCE: Abuyog, Southern Leyte
REGION: Eastern Visayas (Region VIII)
PERSON: created by virtue of PD. No. 28 by the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos and was
initiated by the director of the bureau of prisons, Ret. Brig. Gen. Vicente R. Raval
SUB COLONY:
PRODUCTS: Handicrafts

7. The Correctional Institution for Women (CIW)

YEAR: 1931
AREA: 18 hectares
PROVINCE: Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila
REGION: National Capital Region (NCR)
PERSON: during the incumbency of Secretary of Justice Agnes VST Devanadera
SUB COLONY:
FACILITIES: Maximum Security Compound which consists of the Old and New Building, the
Medium Security Camp and Minimum Security Camp.
