Sagario (Archt 13 Space Articulation)

The document provides instructions for an architecture assignment to analyze the space articulation and kinesthetic theory used in various famous buildings and urban plans. It then analyzes the floor plans of the White House and Taj Mahal, noting their symmetrical designs and use of spatial organization and relationships. It also analyzes the section elevations of Villa Savoye and Villa Roche, describing their geometric forms and use of space. Finally, it summarizes the fan-shaped grid pattern city plan of Chandigarh, India designed by Le Corbusier.

SPACE ARTICULATION Assignment

By: maria tisha b. sagario

Subject: Theory of Architecture

Subject Teacher: ar. Alaine tess cabije
Instructions:
Pick 2 floorplans, 2 section elevations and 1 urban site plans
of a famous buildings or cities.
1. describe the picture
2. what type of space articulation used in the floorplan/
section.
3. Explain the kinesthetic theory used by the designer.

A. White House (state floor – floor plan)

• This floorplan is rectangular in shape and has a half circle space,

the south portico.
• Based on the picture, I can mainly see that it has a double square
proportion in accordance with Palladio’s proportion of rooms.
• The blue room is oval in shape.
• The proportion of the East Room is symmetrical with the
proportion of the space with the state dining room, stair hall,
private dining room, and pantry.
• The north portico is rectangle in shape.
• There is pass through space path-space relationship found in the
floorplan and termination of space.
• Spatial Organization
➢ The east wing has big space because its function is to hold
events. (functional proximities)
➢ Tailored Space
➢ There is combination of grid and linear arrangement and
organization of space.
• Space to Space Relationships
➢ Spaced linked by a common space is applied and form a linear
sequence of space such as the state dining room and red
room.
➢ Space within a space is applied by the blue room, it is
surrounded by south portico, red room, green room, and
cross hall.
• Space Articulations
➢ Columns at the south portico define the edges and provide
visual continuity.
• Kinesthetics is applied to the spacial organization and size of room
depending on the functionality that it provides.

2. Taj Mahal (floor plan)

• The Taj Mahal floor plan shows symmetry.
• Pattern-like design and space distribution.
• It focuses on the octagon shape theme all throughout the
structure.
• Spatial Organization
➢ The plan provides aesthetics and beautiful architecture with
golden proportions and symmetry.
➢ It has radial organization where there is combination of
centralized and linear organizations.
• Space to Space Relationship
➢ There is space within space application in the central chamber
and cenotaph.

3. villa savoye (section elevation)

• The Villa Savoye might be viewed as Le Corbusier's own Parthenon, a

development of his architectural system.
• Its fundamental geometric volumes encapsulate his concept of the type of
form, and the building's meticulous attention of procession and proportion ties
it to Classical principles.
• At the same time, its clean simplicity and use of concrete remind the
architect's admiration for finely calibrated technical achievements.
• Elevated Base Plane - Support of ground-level pilotis, elevating the building
from the earth and allowing the garden to be extended to the space
beneath.
• Overplane is functional and flat.
• Windows and other elements portray beautiful design.
• The spaces and form are used to respond to sensory and kinesthetic
purposes.

4. villa roche

• The design seen is simple.

• It is organized around three themes:
• first, the relationship between the regulating line and the dom-ino frame;
second, its position as a proportionate device based on a relation-defining
system rather than a module system; and third, its role as a practical device
in the design process.
• Its Spatial Organization is arranged and organized in Grid Organization that is
irregular to accommodate specific dimension requirements.
• Base Elevation is present in this design or structure section elevationplan.
• All ceiling planes of the structure are all flat.
• The spaces and forms adapt to sensory and kinesthetic needs.

5. Chandigarh, India

• The Chandigarh, India city plan designed cluster of bungalows that balances
distribution and arrangement of equivalent forms and spaces, with simple
arrangement in each unit. The city plan is fan shaped. It has hierarchy of open
spaces, living units, circular system, etc.
• It is arranged in Grid Pattern that is irregular.
• The city plan's layout was changed from one with a curving road network to
one with a rectangular shape with a grid iron pattern for rapid traffic lanes,
as well as a reduction in size for economic reasons.
• Chandigarh is India's safest, cleanest, and best-planned city. The city is neatly
split into parts, thanks to the work of French architect Le Corbusier. The
roadways are large and well-connected, with roundabouts that are tastefully
manicured.
