BACKGROUND AND AIMS OF NEW PRODUCT
DEVELOPMET [No.1]
Background of development
Concerns about exhaustion of fossil fuels and global warming have
recently grown worldwide. Growing concern about the exhaustion of fossil
fuels has led to inflating crude oil prices. Business persons have put
importance on the reduction of fuel cost. The reduction of CO2 emissions
has also becomes an issue which all the businesses should tackle.
Komatsu developed the "Hybrid system" for hydraulic excavators, which
recovers the energy produced during swing deceleration and braking,
stores it as electrical energy, and reuse the stored energy in order to attain
both goals of the reduction of fuel costs and reduction of CO2 emission.
The hybrid system installed on the "HB335/365-1" allows for reduction of
fuel consumption by an average of 17 %* and reduction of CO2 emissions
by about 13 kg per hour compared to PC300-8M0.
*: Compared to PC300-8M0 according to Komatsu's standard (The estimation value is assumed for the
average operation of the machine in Japan. The effect is calculated based on measurements in multiple
works. The effect can change depending on the operation)

capacitor, the motor-generator generates electric power and provides it to
the capacitor (to store).
The inverter converts and controls the electric power between the hybrid
components.
The capacitor is one of the unique features of Komatsu's hybrid system.
It can be charged or discharged with the electric energy efficiently and
quickly.
Komatsu developed these 4 hybrid components in-house* and conducted
thorough quality verification tests in-house. As a result, these hybrid
components feature high reliability and excellent durability.

The capacitor is an electric accumulator
which requires only migration of electrons
and ions for charging and discharging.
Compared to batteries which require the
chemical reactions, the capacitor can be
charged and discharged much faster.
Accordingly, the capacitor is able to follow
the frequent changes of engine speed which
are inevitable to construction machinery.

OUTLINE OF HYBRID SYSTEM [No.9]
Characteristics of capacitors (compared to batteries)
Hybrid automobiles require a large amount of energy for starting and
acceleration. After starting, however, they do not need as much energy but
use a uniform amount of energy. Therefore, the hybrid systems of
automobiles use batteries which can be discharged for relatively long
periods.
On the other hand, construction machines use a large amount of energy in
a short period of time. So, the hybrid systems of construction machines
use capacitors which can discharge and charge a large amount of energy
quickly.
Since batteries utilize chemical reactions for charging and discharging,
they cannot handle large energy flows quickly.
Since capacitors utilize migration of electrons and ions for charging and
discharging, capacitors are able to deal with a large amount of electric
energy quickly. In addition, solid state capacitors deteriorate less when
compared to batteries, and are maintenance-free without the need for
refilling of electrolyte.

Reduced fuel consumption
(3) Effect of reducing fuel consumption achieved by running
engine at lowest possible speeds
Latest fuel saving technologies including the one for lowering engine-
pump matching speed are employed in the machines.
(3)-1 Lowered engine-pump matching speed
HB335/365-1 employ the engine-pump matching control that
allows the engine to run at the lowest possible speed while
allowing the hydraulic pump to deliver necessary and sufficient
oil. Thus, the engine speed is matched with the pump delivery
at a point where the fuel efficiency is high, further reducing
fuel consumption. This lowered engine-pump matching speed
inevitably requires the engine to change its speed largely,
so the engine has to accelerate from a low speed to a high
speed quickly. The HB335/365-1 uses the energy stored
in the capacitor to drive the motor-generator that assists engine
acceleration.

Effect of reducing fuel
consumption is remarkable. Effect of reducing fuel Effect of reducing fuel
(Average 17 %)
consumption is small consumption is almost zero.

Proper effect of reducing fuel consumption may not be achieved in the applications
using the machine in ATT mode and B (breaker)/L (lifting) mode.
The effect of lowered engine-pump matching speed may not be obtained in the
applications that require the engine to keep running at high speeds or at a fixed
speed range.

ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY FEATURES [No.24]

Reduced fuel consumption
 ATT mode
When the machine is only set in ATT mode, the machine can enjoy the
effect of reducing fuel consumption from the use of hybrid system and
lowered engine-pump matching speed. However, while depressing the
attachment pedal to operate the attachment, the engine keeps running
in the high speed range eliminating the effect from the lowered
engine-pump matching speed. If the work involves frequent swing
operations, the swing energy regeneration effect can be expected.
 B (breaker) / L (lifting) mode
Selecting B or L mode shifts the engine control to be same as that of
PC300-8M0.

Reduced fuel consumption
(6) Examples of the fuel saving effect by operations
(6)-1 Digging and loading (swing angle : 90º to 180º)
The fuel saving technologies (see page 23) are all available.
However, the amount of the fuel reduction varies significantly by
the condition of operation.
Larger effect : lighter engine load, larger swing angle
Smaller effect : heavier engine load, smaller swing angle
*NOTE: At swing operation, when the boom is operated quickly
at the same time, the effect becomes smaller. This is
because the quick boom lift requires the large oil flow,
so the low-speed engine and pump matching technology
cannot be utilized and the engine speed remains high.
(Please refer to the section "Heavy duty operation"
column in the table on page 37.)

(6)-2 Hydraulic hammer operation

Once the operators set the working mode to B mode, the engine
speed is fixed and the low-speed engine and pump matching
technology becomes unavailable.
*NOTE: However, this operation doesn't require so much oil flow
or heavy engine load, so this operation is not the one of
high fuel consumption
(almost same as that with PC300-8M0)
(6)-3 Hydraulic attachments operation (such as the fork, grapple, etc.)
Except for the ATT pedal operation, the fuel saving technologies
(see page 45-46) are all available. During the ATT pedal is
operated, low-speed engine and pump matching technology is
automatically cancelled.
*NOTE: The effect of the fuel saving is varied significantly
depending on the proportion of ATT pedal operation.

engine speed cannot be lowered and remains high.

Points to remember in marketing
(undesirable working environment)
Tropical region specification and high altitude specification are not
available for the following reasons.
 High ambient temperature environment
Working environment where the ambient temperature exceeds 45 ºC is
not desirable because the hybrid system components are affected by
high temperature and cannot demonstrate their performances fully.
 High altitude
Engine-derate control for the operation in high altitude is applied to
protect the engine. In the region where the altitude exceeds 2300 m,
the travel speed and work equipment speed maybe lower.

THE DIFFERENCE OF OPERATION FEELING FROM

PC300-8M0 [No.1]
Because HB335/365-1 has introduced cutting-edge control technology
for fuel-savings, operators will be able to point out different operational
feeling like the following.
These differences are not abnormalities. Please understand the
reasons for the differences and explain to the customer.

THE DIFFERENCE OF OPERATION FEELING FROM

PC300-8M0 [No.2]
(1) No operation (neutral levers or pedals position)
Some operators may feel more vibration.
This is normal and is because HB335/365-1 uses engine and the engine speed
at idling is lower compared with the conventional machine like PC300-8M0.
These are for the fuel saving.
Sometimes the engine speed rises automatically. (up to about
1000min-1 (rpm))
This is only when the voltage in the capacitor gets lower, and the duration is
only about 20 seconds.
This is because the hybrid controller charges the capacitor using the increased
energy of the engine, and is normal.

THE DIFFERENCE OF OPERATION FEELING FROM

PC300-8M0 [No.3]
(2) Starting operation of work equipment (from no operation)
Some operators can point out that the operation feeling is different such
as the vibration or the engine speed at the start of the work equipment
operation. This is because the engine speed at the beginning is lower and the
engine acceleration is different because of the electric assist compared with
PC300-8M0, and is normal.
The motion of the work equipment itself is adjusted to be similar to that of
PC300-8M0. The exhaust is darker at this engine acceleration.
This is because of the momentary mismatch between the amount of the fuel
and the air during the engine speed change. This is the same mechanism at the
engine start of conventional machine like PC300-8M0, and is normal.
Energy flow Engine Motor-generator
The motor-generator assists the Hydraulic
engine acceleration with the electric pump
energy from the capacitor

(3) Hoist swing operation (swing + boom raise)
Some operator s can feel the swing faster or the boom rise slower.
This is because the driven methods are different between the swing and the
boom raising operation, and is normal.
The swing is by electric energy, which allows the quick startup and is
independent to the engine speed, while the boom raising operation is by the
hydraulic energy, which has a small lag at startup.
The swing startup speed is adjustable to be slower, depending on the
operator's preferences.
(Please see the shop manual for the adjustment procedure.)
Energy flow Engine Motor-generator
Swing acceleration is driven by the Hydraulic
electric energy both from the capacitor pump
and the motor-generator

(4) Down swing operation (swing + boom down)
Some operators can feel the vibration or the engine sound is different at
boom operation downwards, etc..
This is because the engine speed is controlled to be lower for the fuel saving,
only when the operation doesn't require large oil flow, and is normal.
The motion of the work equipment itself is adjusted to be similar to that of
PC300-8M0.

matching), please see the following chapter.

(5) At the moment of the operation end
The engine speed is instantly dropped when the operators stop the levers or
pedals operation.
This is because the stand-by engine speed is controlled to be lower,
utilizing the quick restart performance with the electric energy assist.
This is normal.
