Past progressive Tense

Twelve verb tenses:

● Simple present ● Present progressive


● simple past ● Past progressive
● simple future ● Future progressive

● Present perfect ● Present perfect progressive


● Past perfect ● Past perfect progressive
● Future perfect ● Future perfect progressive

Also known as past continuous

The pattern in making a Past Progressive Tense statement is:


(subject + was/were + verb in present progressive or the -ing form)

Past Progressive is used to refer to actions continuously happening at a certain moment in


the past.

Example:
● We were watering the plants this morning.
● It was raining last night.
● They were arguing about something.

Past Progressive is used for two actions happening at the same time in the past.

Example:
● She was cooking while her younger sisters were playing.
● Tommy was crying while his father was scolding him.
● I was reading while Beth was practicing her speech.

Past Progressive is used for interruptions while certain actions are happening in the past.

Example:
● They were walking home when it rained.
● When her friends came, she was taking a shower.
● I was washing the dishes when the phone rang.

Negative:
(subject + was/were not + verb in present progressive)

Example:

● I was cleaning the garden this ● I was not cleaning the garden this

● It was raining last night. ● It was not raining last night.

Exercise; Make sentences in past progressive
a) She (bake) when her children came home
Positive: She was baking when her children came home
Negative: She was not baking when her children came home
Question: Was she baking when her children came home?
b) We (skate) when the accident happened.
Positive: We were skating when the accident happened
Negative: we were not skating when the accident happened
Question: Were we skating when the accident happened?
c) Billy (play) with the kids this afternoon.
Positive: Billy was playing with the kids this afternoon.
Negative: Billy was not playing with the kids this afternoon.
Question: Was Billy playing with the kids this afternoon?
d) They (talk) loudly when Miss Newton passed by.
Positive: They were talking loudly when Miss Newton passed by.
Negative: They were not talking loudly when Miss Newton passed by.
Question: Were they talking loudly when Miss Newton passed by?
e) It (snow) when they decided to drive home
Positive: It was snowing when they decided to drive home
Negative: It was not snowing when they decided to drive home
Question: Was it snowing when they decided to drive home?

El patrón para hacer una declaración en tiempo pasado progresivo es:


(Sujeto + era / estaba + verbo en presente progresivo o en -ing)

Pasado progresivo se utiliza para referirse a acciones que suceden continuamente en un


momento determinado del pasado.

Ejemplo:
● Esta mañana estábamos regando las plantas.
● Anoche estuvo lloviendo.
● Estaban discutiendo por algo.

Pasado progresivo se utiliza para dos acciones que ocurren al mismo tiempo en el pasado.

Ejemplo:
● Ella cocinaba mientras sus hermanas menores jugaban.
● Tommy lloraba mientras su padre lo regañaba.
● Estaba leyendo mientras Beth practicaba su discurso.

Pasado Progresivo se utiliza para interrupciones mientras ocurren ciertas acciones en el


pasado.

Ejemplo:
● Iban caminando a casa cuando llovió.
● Cuando llegaron sus amigas, ella se estaba duchando.
● Estaba lavando los platos cuando sonó el teléfono.

Negativo:
(Sujeto + no era / no estaba + verbo en presente progresivo)

Ejemplo:
● Esta mañana estaba limpiando el ● Esta mañana no estaba limpiando el
jardín. jardín.
● Anoche estuvo lloviendo. ● Anoche no llovió.
● Estaban caminando a casa cuando ● No caminaban a casa cuando llovió.

Ejercicio; Hacer oraciones en pasado progresivo.

a) Ella (horneaba) cuando sus hijos llegaban a casa.

Positivo: Estaba horneando cuando sus hijos llegaron a casa.


Negativo: No estaba horneando cuando sus hijos llegaron a casa.
Pregunta: ¿Estaba horneando cuando sus hijos llegaron a casa?

b) Nosotros (patinamos) cuando ocurrió el accidente.

Positivo: Estábamos patinando cuando ocurrió el accidente.


Negativo: no estábamos patinando cuando ocurrió el accidente.
Pregunta: ¿Estábamos patinando cuando ocurrió el accidente?

c) Billy (juega) con los niños esta tarde.

Positivo: Billy estaba jugando con los niños esta tarde.


Negativo: Billy no estaba jugando con los niños esta tarde.
Pregunta: ¿Billy estaba jugando con los niños esta tarde?

d) Ellos (hablan) en voz alta cuando pasó la señorita Newton.

Positivo: estaban hablando en voz alta cuando pasó la señorita Newton.


Negativo: No estaban hablando en voz alta cuando pasó la señorita Newton.
Pregunta: ¿Estaban hablando en voz alta cuando pasó la señorita Newton?

e) Estaba (nieve) cuando decidieron conducir a casa.


Positivo: Estaba nevando cuando decidieron conducir a casa.
Negativo: No nevaba cuando decidieron conducir a casa.
Pregunta: ¿Estaba nevando cuando decidieron conducir a casa?
