Technical information should always be available to the foremen and mechanics, because their
careful and constant adherence to the instructions is essential to ensure vehicle road-worthiness and
safety. In addition, the normal basic safety precautions for working on motor vehicles must, as a
matter of course, be observed.

1.1 General
The central locking opens and closes the doors, luggage com‐
partment and fuel tank flap. If the airbags are triggered in the
event of an accident, all the doors are automatically unlocked.
Additional safety settings can provide enhanced comfort as an
option: Automatic locking, automatic luggage compartment lock‐
ing or safety central locking. Then all the doors and the luggage
compartment are automatically closed if the vehicle is being driv‐
en faster than about 15 km/h. The luggage compartment locks
when the speed exceeds 5 km/h and the safety central locking
releases only the driver's door on first opening. Only on the sec‐
ond opening do the front passenger door and the rear lid open.
Pressing the Open button on the remote control key once unlocks
the vehicle's doors. The Multimedia Interface (MMI) or the radio
unit as appropriate indicate which doors are being unlocked by
the central locking. Pressing the button twice unlocks all the ve‐
hicle doors and the rear lid regardless of the settings.
Unlocking of the vehicle is indicated by the turn signal indicators
flashing twice. If no door or the luggage compartment lid is
opened within 60 seconds of the vehicle being unlocked, the ve‐
hicle automatically locks again. This function prevents unintended
permanent unlocking of the vehicle.
Term Definition
MMI - Multi Me‐ The MMI (Multi Media Interface) is an integrated operating concept providing use-friendly
dia Interface logical and intuitive operation of vehicle systems and infotainment components. The MMI
essentially comprises two elements: the MMI terminal in the centre console and the MMI
display, optionally monochrome or colour, built-in to the dash panel.

Remote control key In the new key concept the vehicle is now started by
pushing the key into the ignition lock rather than by
turning it. As a result, the push-button pop-out key bit is
no longer featured.
1.3.1 General
Bidirectional data exchange between the remote control key and
the convenience system central control unit -J393- is routed via
the central locking and anti-theft alarm aerial -R47- . This enables
the status of the central locking to be transmitted to the key.
If a button is pressed outside of the key's radio range, the LED
built-in to the key indicates the locking status of the vehicle. The
locking status brought about with the key in question the last time
the central locking was operated is always indicated. If the LED
does not light up, the remote control key battery is not in good
working order.
If the vehicle has been opened or locked by a second key in the
meantime, the locking status in the first key does not change. The
radio frequency of the radio remote control is 315 MHz, 433 MHz
or 868 MHz, depending on variant. The specific radio frequency
is optimised for data transfer between the vehicle key and the
control unit. As this frequency is permitted only for very short
transmission pulses, the otherwise disturbing interference from
continuous radio transmitters such as baby monitoring equip‐
ment, wireless headphone etc. is no longer a problem.

Remote control key In the new key concept the vehicle is now started by
pushing the key into the ignition lock rather than by
turning it. As a result, the push-button pop-out key
bit is no longer featured.
2.3.1 General
When unlocking and locking the vehicle on the driver or passen‐
ger side, the windows in the doors can be opened or closed at the
same time. All electric windows (including the panorama roof)
open or close as appropriate when the Open or Close button on
the radio remote control is held down.
When the button is released the opening or closing operation
stops immediately. All the windows also respond in the way out‐
lined above when the key is turned in the door lock to the Unlock
position and held there. Likewise, all the windows are closed
when the key is turned in the door lock to the Lock position and
held there. Again, when released the operation is interrupted.
Radio remote control offers a high degree of comfort for opening
and locking a vehicle. It can be used to unlock and lock the vehicle
centrally (doors, fuel tank flap and luggage compartment lid) from
a distance. This function, built-in to the ignition key, is a great
practical aid particularly at night (the interior lighting is automati‐
cally activated on unlocking) and in bad weather.
2.3.2 Preconditions:
♦ Terminal 15 off and S-contact off
♦ Enable signal from convenience system central control unit -
J393- received by door control units
♦ Enable signal from convenience system central control unit -
J393- received by sun roof control unit -J245 -
♦ A lock location (driver's door lock, radio remote control ...) op‐
erated for longer than 2 seconds
♦ No window in thermal protection mode
♦ All windows standardised
♦ No high or low voltage

2.4.1 Coding
The coding in the convenience system central control unit -J393
- can only be performed using Software Version Management
(SVM).
2.4.2 General
For convenience opening/closing, two settings are of importance
in the coding of the convenience system central control unit -
J393- :
♦ Convenience function via remote active /not active
♦ Panorama roof fitted/ not fitted
If the convenience function via remote was not activated in the
coding of the convenience system central control unit -J393- , the
windows/panorama roof cannot be closed or opened with the ra‐
dio remote control.
Adaptions for convenience operation by radio remote control for
the convenience system central control unit -J393- are then also
irrelevant. In the Multimedia Interface (MMI) or on the radio unit
as appropriate, no convenience opening settings can be made.
To open and close a fitted panorama roof electrically, it must be
coded as fitted in the convenience system central control unit -
J393- . If a fitted panorama roof is not coded, adaptions for it in
the convenience system central control unit -J393- are not of use.
Likewise, no panorama roof settings can be made on the Multi‐
media Interface (MMI) or radio unit.
The country variant of the dash panel insert determines the cod‐
ing options of the convenience system central control unit -J393- .
The parameters to set the convenience functions are correct by
default, and do not normally need to be changed. The settings for
convenience functions via remote only become active when the
convenience function has been activated by the coding.
The functions for setting the vehicle convenience systems can be
selected on the central "Car" menu.
Under the "Windows" menu item the following can be set:
♦ Front windows convenience opening
♦ Rear windows convenience opening
♦ Panorama roof opening
Note
The settings made are stored only for the current key in use.

3 Raising/lowering windows
3.1 General
The window lifter switches are executed with voltage-coded dou‐
ble push and pull buttons. The double push and pull function
enables manual and automatic window operation. By way of the
driver's door window lifter operating unit -E512- the driver can
operate all the windows.
The local window lifter switches fitted in the doors can only oper‐
ate the corresponding window. The driver's door control unit -
J386- reads in the switches of the driver's door window lifter
operating unit -E512- and transmits the information over CAN to
the front passenger door control unit -J387- .
3.3.1 General
The window lifters are enabled when:
the onboard power supply control unit -J519- sends the "terminal
15 on" signal over the convenience system CAN.
the convenience system central control unit -J393- sends the door
control units the enable signal for the window lifters over the con‐
venience system CAN.
After the transition from "terminal 15 on" to "terminal 15 off" the
enable is maintained for 10 minutes. This run-on time is interrup‐
ted if one of the two front doors is opened or the vehicle is locked
by radio remote control.
A distinction is made between 3 states:
♦ Ignition off, window lifters not enabled
♦ Ignition off, window lifters enabled
♦ Ignition on, window lifters enabled

Opening windows
All windows can be opened centrally by the driver's door window
lifter operating unit -E512- . By way of the front passenger door
window lifter switch -E107- the window in the front passenger
door can be opened.
When two buttons are pressed in the open direction the window
stops when the last valid button signal is cancelled. When the
second operation point is operated in the opposite direction to‐
wards the close position, the window lifter button pressed to open
always has priority.
Closing is stopped by blocking shut-off or soft run-in, a conven‐
ience closing command or after a maximum of 20 seconds.
Automatic operation
Note
Note
Standardisation
In order to implement automatic operation, soft run-in, soft stop
and the excess-force limiter, a standardisation (adaption) run de‐
termines the number of motor revolutions from the bottom to top
end stops.
From outside by "Central closing":
After "central closing" standardisation is completed following
blocking shut-off of the window at its upper stop limit.
From inside at "terminal 15 on":
♦ After installing the motor, the door control unit and attached
wiring, first turn the ignition on and then off again.
♦ Pressing the window lifter switch in the Close direction causes
the window to move up to its limit stop. Then release the win‐
dow lifter button briefly and press it again immediately after‐
wards and hold it down for about two seconds.
♦ The window lifter is now in the basic setting and the opening/
closing function (window lifter automatic operation mode) is
activated.
Excess-force limiter
Note
This function is coded by default in the door control units and for
safety reasons should not be changed.
3.4.1 Coding
The coding in the door control units can only be performed using
Software Version Management (SVM).
